Good morning everyone. I just had a question about what kind of strategy goes into your minds picking numbers.
I am an economics teacher in Shanghai and mostly play poker and do sports betting. Just recently getting into playing the lotto, and specifically these two. I was wondering how many people play just the QP or actually put in their own numbers. And for those that do pick your numbers what kind, if any of strategy do you put into it.
For me, I do birthday numbers, Notre Dame football players. I have also seen the "hot" "cold" and "overdue" numbers on other websites. Anyways, just seeing who does what and how/why. Not trying to sell anything, steal from anyone.

Unlike poker and sports, lottery results are random and completely unaffected by any skill or knowledge the player might have. Since that means that there is no strategy that can increase your chances of winning the only thing you can do is try to pick numbers that reduce your chances of sharing a jackpot if your numbers happen to come up. The lotteries don't share much information on the numbers that are played disproportionately, but we know that a lot of people play patterns and sequential numbers. And of course nobody was born on a day that makes them think they should play a number above 31.
As for those who play QP, the lotteries report that they account for 70 to 80% of sales.

Happy playing everyone and GL!
There are a Systems subforum and Mystical subforum where you can see how people use convoluted mathematical formulas and dreams to come up with numbers. There's a huge thread in the Math subforum about some Swedish dude's neural network software for picking lottery numbers.
There's a user who goes by "Stat$talker" who uses top secret math to lose money twice a week on Georgia Jumbo Bucks Lotto.
Poke around all the subforums and you'll find what you're looking for. Personally, I have more faith in numbers that appear in dreams than numbers that arise from anyone's calculations.
(I pick mine randomly, but I like to use my own random number generators instead of quick picks at the terminal, that way I don't get any repeating numbers when I buy multiple lines. It's just an idiosyncrasy.)

I haven't done this in a while, but I have a jar of pennies that I numbered 1 - 70. If I was playing multiple lines, I would just draw pennies, but I would leave out the ones that were drawn so I wouldn't have repeats.I never won anything significant, but it's as good as any other method, including QP's.

Study the numbers where there was a jackpot winner. For example, MegaMillions.
There are 17 Jackpot Winners since the Mega Millions matrix change (5 of 70 + 1 of 25) on 10/31/2017. Try to identify patterns (consecutive #'s, same last #'s, same MB and WB, etc) from the following results:

I've used customized dice for Po'ball, though you cant generate every combination that way or with uniform probability. The 0-9 ten sided dice are great for P3/P4.
