President George Washington delivered his first Sate of the Union address to Congress In Manhattan,New York

DateLine:January 17, New Orleans

The last major engagement f th War of 1812 came to a climatic end as US forces decisively defeated th British in the Battle of New Orleans; either side not having gotten word of the signing of a peace treaty. Outcome however did end Brittan's direct territorial ambitions of reclaiming power in it's former colony.

DateLine: 1861, Mississippi, Civil War Prelude

Miss became the second state to secede from the Union, the same day the supply ship 'Star of the West' a merchant vessel bringing reinforcements and material to Federal troops at Fort Sumter, South Carolina retreated in the face of heavy enemy fire.

Thomas Paine anonymously published his highly influential Revolutionary Era  pamphlet "Common Sense" which argued for American Independence from British king's rule.

Massachusetts Republican Edward R. Brook, the first black Americanelected to the US Senate by majority electorate vote took his seat  :-)

Union General Major General William T. Sherman decreed, after conquering the Southland, that 400,000 acres of land of the former Confederate South would be divided into 40 acre lots and given freely from the Union  to former slaves.  :-)
