Ok, its been 20 years since I took a college statistics course.  I purchased 100 Powerball tickets, would there be a greater chance of winning if I used the same numbers 100 times? or 100 tickets with random numbers selected.  I am thinking the random numbers, but it is only a guess.  Any thoughts?

Yea only one of those tickets would be good anyway. You can't get the jackpot 100 times, only once. Hence the "shared" jackpot rules if more than one person hits it. You may as well burn the other \$99, or give it to charity. Not to mention that you could lose out on your other tickets actually winning lower tier prizes more than once.

When the odds are such as they are, 5 or a 100 numbers, it hardly makes any difference.

Did you mean that you would pick  say 20 Numbers and just use thos e20 numbers to play 100 lines? Wheeling them is a good idea but if youdid do this I would still buy at least 1 insta pik.. as a backup play in case none of the 20 numbers you picked showed!

If you're going to spend \$100 on a lottery game, the best time to do it is now, with a huge jackpot.

Spending \$100 might seem like a lot, but many lottery players spend \$1000-\$2000 a year, so \$200-\$300 on big jackpots two or three times a year isn't all that ridiculous, as long as you can afford to lose.

Just make sure all six numbers aren't exactly the same on every ticket!  Unless of course you're confident in your one combination and sure that someone else will win, ensuring you 100 shares of the jackpot while the other guy gets just 1 share!

The nice thing about having a computer is you really don't have to know a lot about statistics to run a simulation to see what happens. If you regularly buy 100 tickets when you play PowerBall, just record them and check them after each drawing. If the older numbers win more than the most  recent numbers then you will have one possible answer.  I personally think 100 tickets are just as good as any other 100 tickets as long as there aren't any repeated combinations.

Actually, there can be an advantage of having the same numbers on multiple tickets. There was a guy, a year or two ago, who always played the same number. He forgot he had bought a ticket, so bought another one. Three tickets won the jackpot. He got two-thirds, because he had two tickets. If he had bought only one ticket, he would only have recived half.

Buying one hundred tickets with the same number may not make a lot of sense, but if that number came up, the jackpot would be divided between all the winning tickets. Having 100 out of 101 winning tickets, for example, would get you a major section of the pie.

Some times I will buy a QP for MM in New York, then go over to NJ and buy the same number. So far, it has been a waste of two dollars. Who knows, some day it might hit!
