A man who took his wife out for a birthday meal returned home to find he had won £4.3 million on the lottery.

Mike Stone, from Leyland in Lancashire, took his wife Sarah out last Saturday night to celebrate her 46th birthday.

When the couple came home, they discovered they had won £4,316,624.

They now plan to take their six children Jennifer, seven, Clair, 11, Daniel, 12, Christopher, 14, Michael, 20, and Caroline, 22 to Disneyland in Florida.

They also plan to buy a bigger house than their three-bedroom semi, although Mr Stone said he would not leave his job as an IT analyst in South Manchester.

Mrs Stone, who is 46 on Saturday, said: Its the best birthday present possible for me and the whole family. It is very special.

Mr Stone, 44, said: We definitely need a bigger house. Our three-bed semi is lovely but theres just not enough room for us all.

Plus, most of us play a musical instrument, so a bigger house will mean we can all play that bit louder.

The couples winning numbers 19, 21, 25, 33, 37 and 41 were selected by the lotterys lucky dip, which Mr Stone has been playing since the first draw in 1994.

The most the family has won in the past was £85.

Mr Stone said: I usually only spend £2 on the lucky dip but I had a lot of change in my pocket so I bought five.

The winning numbers were on the fourth line, so it was worth it.

The family only realised they had won when Mr Stone checked the numbers on the Internet.

Mr Stone, who plays base guitar in a folk band, said: The meal was to celebrate Sarahs 46th birthday, and after wondering if we could afford the steak, we decided to stick to pizza and pasta.

It still cost is £40 so when we got home, I joked to Sarah that Id better go and see if weve become millionaires.

I checked the numbers on the Internet and at first glance I saw I had three that matched on one of my lines.

As I got to the end of the line on the screen, it dawned on me that they all seemed to match and my arms went numb.

He added: It was earth-shattering. You dont expect it.

It was almost like having a stomach complaint for the first few days. It should have been fantastic but it was really uncomfortable.

But its getting more comfortable now.

CASH Only

It would be interesting to compare the UK 6/49 with the Canadian 6/49,                                            especially with the Canadian game about to cost Cdn$2 per play.
