Mega Millions lottery jackpot increases to $31 million

Mega Millions

The jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery has grown to $31 million.

The rollover occurred because none of the tickets sold for Tuesday's $18 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball. The next drawing will be Friday.

There were two second-prize winners from Tuesday night's drawing: 1 from Maryland and 1 from New York.  Each ticket matched all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $250,000.

Also, 26 players matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $10,000.

The winning numbers from Tuesday's drawing were: 15, 27, 36, 38 and 42. The Mega Ball number was 32.

The Texas Megaplier was 4.

Well sales dropped from the previous drawing but matched the jackpot level.  Sales were almost $18,000,000 which is still higher than normal.  We should start seeing larger rolls a lot more frequently now.

Right now both PB and MM are at levels they'd typically be at  if they'd had one more roll than they've actually had. I think that they'll both return to the same sort of rollover amounts we've seen in the recent past within the next roll or two, and that when the jackpots are claimed they'll still just be about one roll ahead of usual. The appeal of the recent jackpots seems to have carried over and made a lot of people decide to buy tickets at a lower threshold than usual, but I'm extremely skeptical that it made a bunch of  new, regular players. OTOH, it's possible that  the recent PB win has lead plenty of people to either start new office pools, or perhaps play an extra $1 each time. Even if that's the case I'm still skeptical that  it would increase the minimum sales levels by the amount suggested by the recent rollovers. Of course I wouldn't mind at all if I'm wrong, since I'm planning on collecting 30 cents from each of those tickets in early May.

Although sales drop in the last draw, I think MM will pick it up again.

In a previous post I picked the first drawing in May. It was somewhat arbitrary, but based on past rollovers I figured that would be one or two rolls past the current record (MM last November, 315 advertised, and about 184 cash). Already being one roll ahead of where I would have expected, and based on the larger rollovers in the last big one compared to November,  I'd be very happy to take the record one or two draws sooner, in late April.

I'm assuming that you have the dates off by one draw in your list, so that 3-10 is really 3-14.  I'd be happy to be wrong, but I think your projections are a bit too generous over the next several rolls and it will return to levels a bit closer to the past.  OTOH, I think your later projections are a bit too conservative. Where you've got 6 rolls from 31 to 140 and then  5 from 140 to 300, I'd guess 7 and 4.

Just for fun, here's about what I'd expect if it continues to roll, and for even more fun I continued it to the first drawing in May. I think a jump from 300 to 375 is pretty reasonable, but after that I really don't have much of a clue. Any roll past 400 will start some unprecedented insanity just for being another even hundred threshold being crossed for the first time, and 500 would be even wilder for being half a billion. Of course even starting from 200 the probability of really seeing a roll to the 500 range is perhaps 2 or 3%. It's likely to be a while longer before we actually see what happens at those levels.

3-14:  42
3-17:  54
3-21:  68
3-24:  83
3-28: 100
3-31: 118
4-4:  141
4-7:  170
4-11: 200
4-14: 245
4-18: 300
4-21: 375
4-25: 465
4-28: 600
5-2:  750 (advertised, then bumped to 763 for the final tally. After paying taxes on the cash I'd have to struggle by with just a bit over a quarter billion.)

You are scaring me.  I have agreed with you too many times!!!

We obviously have different ideas about some stuff, but the fact that we're both here means we've also got some ideas in common. I guess you're just going to have to live with it.

I'm especially gratified that one of the things you agree with is that I'll be collecting in May.  How do you feel about also crossing your fingers? Personally, I'm not big on prayer, but I'm sure it won't hurt either.

You can win in May, no problem.  I'll just have to settle for whatever amount it reaches in April.

Here's an idea. Since you want to claim your winnings as soon as the last ball is drawn and I'm willing to wait a month or so while I get squared away. You can have the record jackpot in late April, but you have to loan me 100 grand. I'll pay you back 2 months later, along with 3% interest, when I collect my record jackpot in early July. I've always thought it would be fitting to win on Independence Day, anyway.

BTW, there's something else we agree on. Maybe a couple of things, depending on how you look at it. One of the things I'd like to be able to donate to is animal welfare. Maybe set up a low cost, or even free, spay and neuter clinic for the local shelter. Like you, I'm not much interested in donating to people, since they have some power to do things for themselves, so my chosen causes would be things like animals and land preservation and protection.
