Mega Millions

Several members of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team pooled their money and purchased $1,000 worth of Ohio Lottery tickets for Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The estimated jackpot on Tuesday was $168 million.

"There was some talk about looking into buying a share of the team," Kearns said. "We're pretty confident."

Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn, Sean Casey and Rich Aurilia also were part of the group.

There were no winning tickets in the Tuesday Mega Millions drawing.

The Friday Mega Millions drawing is worth $205 million.

$200 each?  C'mon...these guys each earn the equivalent of a state lottery win every year.  Throw in at least $2000 each.

twisted's avatartwisted

I wonder how much they won on Tuesday night.

One's salary does not determine how many lottery tickets to buy.  It's almost certainly a losing proposition, so although it's good to have a chance to win, it doesn't make sense to commit $2,000!

i will "bet"  .....that pete rose put them up to this

and i will also "bet"  ...that when he finds out about this, that major frustration will set in because he can't join his teammates (his alma-mater) on something he has expertise in.  maybe he can re-join the reds now in a gambling "instructional" league.

and maybe just maybe, he is reading this.  hey pete, slide on in here partner (head first).  don't worry about us.  we can take a hit just as well as ray fosse...

p.s.  you can tell that all those guys that ponied up $200 for MEGA are nothing but dumb jocks on steroids.  anyone who has sensibilities knows it only takes a $1 quick pick to "jack" one out of the park...

According to USA Today baseball salaries for the 2005 season are:

Adam Dunn      $4,600,000

Sean Casey      $7,800,000

Ken Griffey Jr.   $12,500,000

Austin Kearns  $930,000

Rich Aurilia        $600,000

Total                $24,430,000

I think they are already well on their to owning part of the team.

Right, salary doesn't determine how many tickets you should buy, but it does influence how many tickets you can buy, and how much it hurts your wallet.

I was making fun of the Cincy publication, which presents the $1,000 expenditure as an extravagant purchase for the ballplayers.  Whether they spent $1,000 or $10,000, it's a lot smaller drop in the bucket for them than it would be for most of us.

LOTTOMIKE's avatarLOTTOMIKE

why would these guys want to bet in the first place????  they already have the millions us common people are striving to get.....one more thing isn't it illegal to gamble in baseball??  didn't pete rose get thrown out forever for his "gambling"

weshar75's avatarweshar75

That would have been funny if they had won to see if they would of fought over the money or if they really would have split it fairly.

JAG331

Lottomike:

Pete Rose was thrown out of baseball for gambling on the outcomes of baseball games.  It only makes sense, you shouldn't be allowed to bet on an dvent over which you have control, a game you can intentionally lose.  In baseball this stems from the Chicago Black Sox scandal of 1919.

Baseball players are not prohibited from gambling in general.

They have enough money. I hope they don't win.

They played in last tuesday's drawing and didn't win nothing. it just proves you don't increase your chances even with 1,000.00 dollars worth of tickets. Jack Whitiker brought one ticket.

Jack Whitaker bought $100 worth of tickets when he won over $314 million in Powerball.

I recall hearing a story a few years ago about a group in Australia that put up $1000.00 each (I don't recall how many people were in the group). They flew to the U.S. when one of the jackpot games was very large and placed a bet. I don't remember the outcome of their venture. Does anyone remember hearing or reading that story.

Concerning the baseball story. Gambling is just as much a challenge as their game is with a quicker reward when you or they win. I understand that some of their paychecks for one year maybe more than some people will see in a life time, but let them play and loss like most of us do. It helps the jackpot grow faster.

DoctorEw220's avatarDoctorEw220

i remember the story. it was for VA's lotto game. the jackpot was larger than the odds. they attempted to buy out the game. i believe the VA lotery stopped them. because of them, lotteries will slow down, or even shut off terminals in which the lottery thinks someone is using to buy out the game, and pre-printed playslips will not work.

Speaking of which...here are the numbers:

Simpson's Lottery Numbers:
For $130,000,000: Order Drawn: 17-3-25-42-38-49 = 3-17-25-38-42-49
For $40,000: 3-6-17-18-22-29 (Marge's numbers that she didn't chip in to play) (drawn in order!)

I wonder how many people play those numbers?

dvdiva's avatardvdiva

I find it strange that multi-millionairs would buy tickets. I make below the mean in WA state and would quit my job the instant I won. Those people are millionairs and if you like baseball seems like the job of a life time. I really wonder how many of them would quit if they won.

If God wants you to win,  you will.

(and it only takes 1 QP to find out)

on another note,  i saw something on TV a while back about shaquille o'neal,  and noted how he likes to buy lottery tix including scratch off's.

which raises the question that has been asked in here before ....would you still play after all that "jack"...?

You can't blame these guys, it takes money to make money they have every right to do same as we can.... I hope they don't win as well but that is being selfish in some people eyes, but we all wish for a swell guy or gal thats a well deserving  person Like me $$$$....

DaJack's avatarDaJack

This is ridiculous...what if Bill Gates decided to buy $100,000 worth of tickets and won? He doesn't need the money nor do the Cincinnati Reds. These guys make at least $300,000, with many making millions and that is not counting endorsement deals, royalties or other income. If the ball boy for the Reds wants to buy a ticket then I'm fine with that, but not Ken Griffey Jr. who lives in a mansion!

ineed9million's avatarineed9million

There are many rich people who play the lottery everyday, we just don't hear about it because they aren't famous like baseball players.  So if you are going to complain about these guys you might as well complain about every single person who plays the lottery, but already is financially secure.  The lottery is not just for poor people looking for an easy way out.  It's also for rich people looking to get richer and get in the news while they are at it.

Pick-4_Master

GOD wants us "ALL TOO WIN" whether your Rich or Poor it doesn't matter so play and have FUN!!!

Litebets27's avatarLitebets27

Some people play for the pleasure or thrill of the win. They don't necessarily need the money. Have you ever gone to Vegas or Atlantic City and watched a high roller who is throwing down hundreds to thousands of dollars worth of chips at the crap table just for the thrill. What goes out one hand comes into the other. People bet for different reasons.

I have to disagree that God wants us "all" to win.  If that were true everyone who plays would win, which isn't the case.

I don't think any of them would quit if they won.  However, I probably would still play even if I already won a jackpot once or had such a job of a lifetime that I wouldn't quit even if I won.

Poor people win lottery jackpots too.  Remember the recent article of a valet parker who barely had any money in the bank won a $149 million Mega Millions jackpot (and ended up splitting it with his wife).

CASH Only

I sure would hope they would choose cash.

God might very well want everyone to win.  But does God have the power to make everyone win?  lol, I'm just pointing something out...not looking for a philosophical discourse here.
Pick-4_Master

Let me just clarify my statement without getting into another "UNNECESSARY" debate.Knowing that GOD loves us all naturally he would desire that we WIN at everything we do whether it's winning the Lottery playing in a Tournament,Casino Games,Bingo,Sports,Contests

TV Game Show etc.....now having said that let me continue by saying GOD does not "CONTROL" or "DECIDE" who wins Lottery games or any other form of games of chance because that would be showing favortism especially when someone wins that's already RICH while someone else in the same city is BARELY making ends meet buys a ticket and loses. Now just because EVERYONE doesn't WIN in the entire USA doesn't have anything to do with GOD and when you get right down to it just about EVERYDAY somewhere in the USA someone has WON a Lottery game Jackpot of some kind whether it's the Pick-4,5 or 6.If no one WINS a Pick-5 jackpot in FL I'm quite sure in the surrounding states some one did

and if some one didn't win the Lottery in FL I'm quite sure in the surroundin states that have Lotteries on Wed/Sat some one did.Maybe we don't have every single person in America winning jackpots all at once

but we do have people some where in a State winning a Jackpot almost every single day.And as I stated before GOD has nothing to do with who wins or not it's just the Luck of The Draw and who's determined to try and be the next winner.

Pick-4_Master

I truly believe GOD has the Power to make everyone WIN he created us and the earth, but he doesn't need to do that because we have the Power to do it ourselves just look at the people that are WINNING there regular

people like us of different races, cultures, religions and income levels.

LOTTOMIKE's avatarLOTTOMIKE

its all about one thing.....LUCK

Pick-4_Master

If "LUCK" is on your side that day you'll "WIN" if not you'll "LOSE"

sergiou2

God doesn't waste his time with lotteries.  I think the Big Guy has more important things to do with his time.  Besides, He doesn't decide who wins and if you think he did, do you think He picked Jack Whittaker to win?

For what?  So the guy could get robbed twice?  Loose over 1.5 million in cash?  So his granddaughter could wind up dead?

Go back and read LottoMike's post....It all comes down to L-U-C-K.

Who cares who plays?  I don't care if Bill Gates or Ken Griffey Jr play.  If they didn't, that would be $2000 less for the jackpot.  The lottery does not discriminate against sex, race, political preference OR how much money you currently have.

Pick-4_Master

I totally AGREE with you "sergiou2" some players feel that the WINNERS are somehow chosen by a "Higher Power" or a Higher Power possibly controls the numbers that are drawn. Why they think this I have no idea but like you just stated what purpose would a Supreme Being have in doing such a thing when it's quite obvious a "LOT" of people could use a Lottery Jackpot but not everyone WINS a Lottery Jackpot.Your neighbor could win the Lottery playing for the very first time while you've been playing for 10 yrs and never won a dime.
