  A grocery store that I frequented for my quick picks closed. They didn't really have customers buying groceries, just lottery tickets. So, the corporate office closed the location. Another boutique gift store is now closed on Mondays, all they do is sell lottery tickets. Many miles from me, there is an area with miles of gas stations that do not sell lottery tickets because they take business from the store. (I haven't figured out that thinking, lottery takes from a store?) I think high volume stores just sell lottery tickets, so they are on the verge of closing?
  

  Lottery is a low profit high work force interaction product.  There has to be enough payroll available to staff the counter for both lottery and the sale of everything else behind the counter along with refunds, rain checks and all other things handled there.  During rollover events a store might have to have people doing only lottery for days at a time, plays hell with schedules.
  
  On the other hand, a marginal business might have a slim enough customer base the hope of drawing in some additional customers who might stick around long enough to buy something besides lottery tickets is a strong lure.
  
  It's the stores in the middle that have the hardest time, where lottery sucks payroll without supporting it enough to be worth having.
