  Tracking number skips is definitely a fun part of choosing numbers for me. I wouldn't necessarily consider it a "key" as even when I make several accurate predictions regarding aspects like skips, that doesn't necessarily mean that I am going to nail a decent prize. For example, even I accurately guess that skips of 3 and 7 are right around the corner, there might be 4 numbers that have skipped 3 times and 3 numbers that have skipped 7 times, and that is several different combination possibilities regarding only the 2 of 5 numbers to fill out a panel, not including the special ball. I definitely find it fun, though.
