Should you win either jackpot: would you hesitate to write a check to fellow forumites?

Avatar

If they faced hard times, l would not hesitate providing that assistance-providing they did not run off at the mouth to others given that the help is private. .how about you?

How would you know that they really need help. And once word gets out that you are giving away money, people will be coming out from every crevices.

Of course if they can prove that they need help, then I would provide them with some money and have them sign some sort of a confidential agreement.

How  would you know? How do we know Mike Tyson is near bankruptcy, if someone were going through tough times do people not seek help- we venturing into the realm of conjecture.
Your 2nd paragraph speaks volumes.

You have as much chance of getting a check from a fellow forumites(LP member) if one of them won a jackpot as the bums that hang out at local lottery retailers wishing everyone who buys a lottery ticket good luck.   Evil Looking

Why would anyone here ever expect such a response even  if they were a personal friend of the winner?

I can sense some of the sarcasm in your replys. But that's alright, it doesn't bother me. Cause in a short while I will be too busy spending my millions while...

I think those replies you speak of do bother you or you would not have made mention of it. This is a discussion forum and opinions are like noses, everybody has one. But don't let us stop you counting your millions Buddhist one.

No one is discussing " expecting a response"  from fellow LP members. Those folk who stand at street corners with placards saying " Help- Homeless, need food"- do you think they expect no one to give them a handout? Why venture out their  doors if they  felt that way? You would have us believe that all members of LP are coldhearted, callous & immature.
You need to broaden your mental horizons.

I wouldn't have you believe anything, I just thought the word forumites was referring to fellow LP posters and was just asking why anyone here would expect such a response.

I've never felt posting at LP entitled me to any special considerations from lottery winners and wanted know why some others might feel different.

Could you make me out a check for ten grand now?

I won't cash it until you win.

That way I won't bother you when you get swamped with all the lowdown scammers who will be clamoring for money.

They got a lotta nerve.

We should tell them to go get a job like we did.

Dirty scammers...

When l was in High School there was this guy in class who almost always wanted to have the last word to any topic despite the fact that at times he was way out in left field- some of his arguments were at times soundly defeated but he soldiered on despite him standing in his own ruins.
You remind me of him, nice guy, friendly disposition but could never give up even when faced with the truth of the matter.
Its no wonder you universally loved Ronnie.

Well, I wouldn't consider her a degenerate gambler - I bet (no pun intended) that she could have had a problem with it if she could have afforded it.  She told me she had cleared "several hundred" from her trip and I doubt I'd been repaid if it weren't for that.  As it was, I definitely got the vibe that she thought - since I had come into a little money - I would just let her have the money.  Like I said, there's been a change in what once was a great relationship, my most favorite neighbors on the block.

I've never been around anyone who had a gambling addiction, at least not a severe one.  I've tried all kinds of bad things in my life, gave them all up long ago but gambling is a thrill and it prob. wouldn't do me to live in Vegas.   I have a cousin who lives there and I said as much to him and he said he blew the rent check several times until his wife put him on a set allowance.  He says he takes the money and goes out and plays the poker machines and usually loses it all.   I've loaned money to drunks and druggies*, though, believing that they really needed the money f/ rent, gas or groceries and that's not what my "loan" went to.  Some had the audacity to come back after they figured I'd forgotten about it and asked f/ more.

*I worked at a liquor store part-time while going back to school a few yrs. ago and stopped at a conv. store on the way.  A guy came up to me as I was leaving and asked f/ a few dollars so he could get something to eat.  He really looked like he needed it and sounded sincere so I gave him a couple bucks and the change in my pocket, enough f/ a corn dog special and went on to work a few blocks away.  About fifteen minutes later he came in wanting to buy "the cheapest vodka you got", not even recognizing me.  That was the last time I ever gave money to strangers, at least on the street like that.

I give people on the street a dollar or 2 all the time and I really don't care what they spend it on. As far as actual charitable giving I give to a church that has dozons of ways of helping people who are in need.

mikeintexas,

I lived in Vegas and worked in the business for almost 20 years. I'd say if that lady wanted someone to help finance her trip to a casino she was on the way to being a degenerate, or at least in Vegas parlance a 'mooch'.

Try this - a guy known as Lenny the Loser was playing on our table while somone was rolling a monster. One of the players is getting a nice collection of chips in his rack and Lenny folowsa him to the rest room (not knowing there are some dealers in there) and gives the guy a sob story about having to go down to Jean (Nevada prison) and getting his daughter that day, she was getting out of jail, he needed gas money, lunch money, etc.....

The player, not knowing Lenny and being a tourist, gives Lenny $300. Lenny and the guy leave the restroom, Lenny goes back to the very same game the guy is on and buys in for $300. Another class act brought to you by one of Las Vegas' degenerates.

noise-gate,

Regarding the Bble and the book of James. Martin Luther wasn't sure James should be in the canon because it promotes work based salvation. All through the NT Jesus, after doing a healing, never said "Your works have made you well." He always said, "Your faith has made you well."

This doesn't mean that people of faith don't do good works. They just know you can't buy or earn your way into heaven.

Work out your own salvation, with fear and trembling.

Also, scripture calls for us to use discernment. As Jon D mentioned you probably started this thread with good intentions, but you need to use discernment, too. Don't let your desire to be a 'good Samaritan' over rule any street smarts or discernment.

LottoMetro's avatar - Lottery-024.jpg

I do not share winnings. If I want to give to charity then I start my own, so I know exactly where the money is going and how it is being used. I would rather "invest" in people, i.e. start a company that creates jobs or provide a valuable product/service. If I ever hit it big I probably wouldn't tell my family at first.

Coin Toss -Luther was the most widely read author of his generation, and within Germany he acquired the status of a prophet. According to the prevailing view among historians, his anti-Jewish rhetoric contributed significantly to the development of antisemitism in Germany, and in the 1930s and 1940s provided an "ideal underpinning" for the Nazis' attacks on Jews.Reinhold Lewin writes that anybody who "wrote against the Jews for whatever reason believed he had the right to justify himself by triumphantly referring to Luther." According to Robert Michael, just about every anti-Jewish book printed in the Third Reich contained references to and quotations from Luther. Heinrich Himmler wrote admiringly of his writings and sermons on the Jews in 1940.

* l think Luther spoke for himself when putting forth the idea of what could and should not be allowed in the Bible Canon. There is no verse in scripture promoting Anti Semitism, its a known fact that Martin Luther was friendly toward the Jews, since he expected that they would convert to Christianity once the pure gospel was preached to them. When this hope went unfulfilled, he became a vehement enemy of the Jews.”

Your point on discerment is right on- l agree 100% with you.

Coin Toss's avatar - shape barbed.jpg

noise-gate,

AH, you've studied history, good.

One of the things that set Luther off was being in Rome and seeing priests from his area paying prostitutes with money they had made by selling indulgences.

Of course, he also said the if he knew the world was ending the next day he'd plant a tree <insert Looney Tunes them here>.

Kind of odd that Luther is credited with starting the Protestant Reformation yet a Luthern church service is so 'catholic'. Of course, he wasn't out to split from the RCC but to reform it from within.

I don't believe that I would write a check to anyone on here except Todd.  The website has provided everyone with useful resources and contacts that have helped me improve.

I might make an effort to meet some of the other great LP posters in other states for lunch.
