WASHINGTON - Caspar W. Weinberger, who served in the Cabinets of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan and was a central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal, died Tuesday at 88.

Cap was one of the most important people in bringing about the demise of the Soviet Union.  He stuck to his guns (no pun intended) about not caving in to peacenicks running around crying about "Star Wars weapons in space" or other nutty statements.

Cap's influence in the Reagan administration was critical to ending the biggest communist threat the world has ever known, and that's why I consider him a true American hero.
