A manual worker at a lubricants factory was planning early retirement today after scooping more than £1.1 million in the UK National Lottery.

Ian Spragg, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, said he was considering using his winnings to quit his job and fly to New Zealand to visit family.

The 61-year-old grandfather, who has used the same numbers since 1994, said he was so tired while checking the results for last Wednesdays Lotto jackpot after a late shift that he thought he was dreaming.

He was accompanied at todays presentation by his wife Hazel, 59, and 37-year-old daughter, Karen.

Describing the moment he realised he had won, Mr Spragg said: I had to work late on Thursday, so when I checked the numbers and saw I had all six numbers I had to double and triple check as I was tired and thought I was dreaming.

When I told Hazel, she just refused to believe me and then, once she realized it was true, she just stared at me in disbelief.

We managed to get to bed about 1.30am but, as you can imagine, neither of us got much sleep, we were so excited.

Mr Spragg, who enjoys betting on the horses, was presented with a check for £1,108,658 at Uttoxeter Racecourse this morning.
