Powerball

Summer may be nearing an end but Powerball is just starting to heat up. There were no Powerball jackpot winners Saturday but 534,432 players across the nation won a total of more than $5.3 million in prizes in America's Game.

Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Saturday's drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $84 million. That's the largest current lottery jackpot in the country.

The cash option for the Wednesday, August 11 drawing will be an estimated $45.3 million. The numbers drawn were: 8, 9, 16, 34, 48 and the Powerball was 8. The Power Play multiplier was 5.

Seven players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Arizona, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Pennsylvania (2), and West Virginia. One of the winning Pennsylvania players purchased the Power Play option. By spending the extra dollar, that player was able to multiply their prize by 5 for a total win of $500,000!

Fifty-three players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Nine of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $25,000.

More than 68,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 5 Saturday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels.

Players purchased more than 18.6 million tickets between Thursday and Saturday night.

The lotteries sold more than $2 billion in Powerball tickets in 2003. That translates into more than $600 million for worthwhile state projects. Powerball is now played in 27 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

$76 million to $84 million-not much of a rollover.

Did you see that Hot Lotto went up from $8,240,000 to only $8,290,000?

Hot loto has rolled over like 60 times and its only 8 million? What a joke.  Its actually not a bad game but it is mired in such poverty ridden states.

You are right. But there may be a few reasons for this. Since it is the summer with people off relaxing on vacation, perhaps many people's minds are not focused on the lottery. There is nothing more motivating to playing the lottery than going through hell at work.

It may also be that since the odds of winning the jackpot are remote people's interest is only piqued at new record-breaking amounts. For some it may not be enough merely to win a million but to win an unprecedented sum of money. Some may think "what's $80 million when others have already won over $200 million?" Of course this speaks for the casual players, not the hard-core Lottery Post members!

The low rollover amounts may also be a strategy of the Multi State Lottery Association to sustain steady revenues. Although sales soar when the jackpots become ridiculously high I'm certain they crash through the floor once someone wins and the prize drops back to $10 million; especially if Mega Millions or an in-State jackpot is substantially higher.

I understand Maine recently became a Powerball state. But with a population of around 1.3 million I don't think their entry will make a big impact to the overall jackpot amounts unlike if California (population: 33.9 million) joined.

The small PB and HL rollovers are because of fluctuating interest rates, which are overall still low.

it has to do more with sales than intrest rates. 18.6 million is about what you would expect for this kind of raise. sales dont take off until the $140 miilion mark

Despite the low rollovers, this $84 million jackpot is the highest the Powerball jackpot has been in three months.
