Mega Millions

The was one winning ticket sold for Friday's record $290 million Mega Millions jackpot.

The winning ticket was sold in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The $290 million jackpot is an estimated amount that is expected to increase after the eleven Mega Millions states complete their count of actual ticket sales.

In Massachusetts, jackpot winners have up to one year to claim their prize, and the jackpot must be claimed in person at lottery headquarters in Braintree.

The winner can take the annuity jackpot in 26 annual payments, or a single lump-sum payment estimated at $169 million.

The winner will have 25% federal tax, plus 5% Massachusetts state tax, withheld from their prize payment.

The winning Mega Millions numbers drawn were 10-25-38-39-50, and the Mega Ball was 12.

I truly hope so too, that it went to someone who deserves it and will do good with it also.

How do you differentiate between someone who is deserving of it. I say if they have a winning ticket they deserve it regardless of who they are or what their intentions are for the money.  Whomever bought it more power to um!

It seems like all the winning Mega Million tickets and even the Power Ball tickets are sold on the east coast. I was standing in line in IL to buy a ticket a guy told me not to bother, he said they have it rigged that the Power Ball and Mega Millions jackpots will have the Big Jackpot winning tickets sold in the eastern states. It sure seems that way in the last couple years. But I'm still playing both. If I don't play I can't have a chance to win.

with exception to illinois and texas, all other mega million states are East,,,which makes your comment technically true, however this is Mass. first lottery win versus 3 for Illinois.....

I have one question- with the prior drawing the jackpot was at 220 and since no one won it went to 280 later raised to 290....my question is this; what happened to the other monies?  If no one had won on Friday then the lottery probably would have gone to 370 million at least instead this is ditributed to the 11 states - but in what manner?

What other monies? The advertized jackpot amount is based on the minimum expected contribution from each participating state to the jackpot pool based on their sales. There is no "other monies". The portions from each state to the jackpot pool from each of the earlier advertized jackpots helped make up the $290 million. The rest of the prize payout levels are the responsibility of each state's lottery individually. So, therefore, there is no "other monies" to be had.

There are no lost funds.  The new jackpot is an ESTIMATE, based upon what the states THINK they will sell, not what they sold in the past.  All funds earmarked for prizes are 100% distributed after each draw (unless no one claims the prize of course).
