The jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery grew to $280 million Wednesday, the highest jackpot for the game since its inception in May, 2002.
The $280 million jackpot ranks as the sixth-highest jackpot of all time.
Because of the huge demand for tickets, players are encouraged to buy their tickets early.
None of the tickets sold for Tuesday's $220 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball. The next drawing will be Friday.
There were 40 second-prize winners from Tuesday night's drawing: 8 from Georgia, 2 from Illinois, 3 from Michigan, 5 from New Jersey, 7 from New York, 8 from Ohio, 5 from Texas, and 2 from Virginia. Those tickets matched all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $175,000 each.
Also, 163 players matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $5,000.
The winning numbers from Tuesday's drawing were: 10, 13, 19, 28, and 38. The Mega Ball number was 1.
I was told that the mega ball is a different colour.
does this mean a mega ball could be the same number as one of the other 5.
Sorry for my ignorance. I have dial-up or I'd download a draw and watch it. Or is the mega ball from the same balls only in a coloured tube. Someone told me the ball was gold so.. (am I mislead)
Shocking no one won with those little numbers, and 40 second place prizes speaks to that. This jackpot has 290+ million written all over it.
no 300 million

The Mega Ball is gold color, and yes, it can be the same number as one of the first 5 (white) balls. It is selected from a separate tumbler.
