Maryland Lottery officials are waiting to award last month's $9.3 million Lotto jackpot to the winning ticket holder, who still has not come forward.

Giant Eagle of Hagerstown, which sold the ticket for the May 29 drawing, will not have to wait for its commission for selling the ticket. Maryland Lottery officials are to present the store with a check for $9,300 today at 11 a.m.

Store manager Jackie Gaffey said there is a lot of "buzz" over the ticket.

"I'm just excited that it was bought here," she said. "To think that it could be someone from Hagerstown is something."

The holder of the ticket with the winning numbers 3-13-15-17-30 and 47 has until Nov. 29 to collect his or her winnings, Maryland Lottery spokeswoman Gail Pelovitz said.

Maryland Lottery officials recommend the winner at least validate the ticket to ensure it can be redeemed.

Sometimes winners will hire lawyers to advise them before claiming their winnings, Pelovitz said.

Last month's winning ticket was the 12th winner sold in Washington County since the game began in 1983. Almost seven months ago, Glenn and Valerie Phenicie of Waynesboro, Pa., won a $3.4 million Lotto jackpot.

Before the May 29 drawing worth $9.3 million, there had been no jackpot winners since Dec. 27, 2003.

The winner can choose to receive the jackpot money as a 25-year annuity or all at once as a cash option of $5.3 million.

Lotto is played by choosing six numbers from 1 to 49. To be a winner, a ticket must have all six numbers drawn.

This cracks me up as far as I know Maryland lottery officials and the local news didn't even televise that they had a winner even though it had been some time since a Lotto jackpot was won. Lottery personnel didn't post the press release until June 1 probably because it was a holiday weekend. of course it could be that the ticket was purchased by a traveler or the person or people who won are contemplating different ways of remaining anonymous.
