Hot Lotto

North Dakota lottery players will have a second game to play starting Thursday, four months after the introduction of Powerball.

It's called Hot Lotto, and state lottery officials say it's similar to Powerball.

For a $1 ticket, Hot Lotto players have a shot at a $1 million jackpot. Players select five numbers from 1 to 39 and one number from 1 to 19 and have a one in 16 chance of winning.

Winning tickets will be drawn on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Jackpot prizes will roll over to the next drawing if there are no winners.

As a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association, North Dakota is only allowed to participate in multistate games.

This requirement limits the state's options to games other states are already playing, said Chuck Keller, North Dakota Lottery director.

North Dakota approached an adjacent state to set up a two-state lottery, but the state declined, Keller said.

Besides Hot Lotto, North Dakota will be introducing the multistate game Wild Card 2 in September or October, said Eileen Wash, director of sales and marketing for the North Dakota Lottery.

Wild Card 2 provides players with two plays for each $1 ticket and one in six chance of winning. Players pick five numbers between 1 and 31 and 1 of 16 wild cards.

Seven other states participate in Hot Lotto including Minnesota, Montana and South Dakota.

The Minnesota State Lottery has had great success with Hot Lotto since its start in April 2002, lottery Public Relations Manager Debbie Hoffman said.
