As if having a fairytale wedding was not enough luck for one day, Spain's Prince Felipe, 36, and new wife Princess Letizia, 31, hit the jackpot yesterday with a lottery ticket given to them as a wedding present, state radio reported.
The happy couple who wed in a glittering ceremony attended by the world's royalty yesterday won 12,000 euros (about $20,000) on a ticket given to them by a Barcelona pensioner, National Spanish Radio said.
The retired employee of state television where Letizia Ortiz worked until she became engaged gave the couple 10 tickets. One ticket won 12,000 euros and another, the number of which corresponded to the date of the wedding, won a 60-euro prize (worth about $100), the radio reported.
The state lottery company's Web site confirmed those ticket numbers had won.
The fairytale wedding ceremony began as Letizia entered Madrid's Almudena Cathedral under a torrential downpour for the capital's first royal wedding in nearly a century. But the rain did not dampen the spirits of tens of thousands of well-wishers straining for a view of the couple or watching the ceremony on huge screens.
Felipe told guests at a wedding lunch he could not hide his happiness. "I'm sure that's because I've fulfilled a wish. I've married the woman I love," he said.
