The Wisconsin Lottery will pay on two sets of winning numbers from Monday's Badger 5 drawing after a mix-up caused confusion over which five numbers were actually drawn, a lottery official said Tuesday.
The Wisconsin Lottery sent the media a winning combination of three, five, 15, 19 and 29, the correct numbers drawn Monday night, spokesman Andrew Bohage said. But lottery employees mistakenly substituted a 25 for the 29 in the numbers posted on its Web site.
Bohage said neither combination produced a winning ticket for the jackpot of $24,000.
But lottery officials checked their computer system Tuesday and determined the combinations produced 18,384 winning tickets worth about $25,000 in prizes.
Those matching two numbers win $1, while those matching three get $2 and four $50.
Lottery officials reviewed a videotape of the drawing Tuesday morning to make sure which numbers were correct.
Bohage said the lottery was reviewing its procedures to see if it can cut down on the possibility of the mix-up happening again.
The lottery uses three forms in reporting numbers. The official drawing form is used as the balls are drawn. Those numbers are then transferred onto a sheet that is sent to the media with drawing results. A third form is used internally that lists the numbers chosen in order and is then used to publish them on the agency's Web site.
Bohage said the hope is to cut down the use of at least one of those forms.
I always said that Wisconsin shouldn't stop televising their lottery draws. I sure miss seeing the draws on tv. If I recall correctly they called it a cost cutting measure. Even if they didn't show the actual Badger 5 draw but simply displayed the B5 numbers during what used to be the evening 6/36 SuperCash draw...it probably would have avoided this mess. Arguably, someone certainly might have caught the error sooner if the numbers had also been televised along with what 'used to be' various live evening draws.
also, i can't understand for the life of me why the lottery manually fills in three forms following the drawing. just manually fill in one official form. why don't they take some of that money saved from cutting televised drawings and utilize a notebook computer to enter the official numbers from the one official form and print out duplicates (if copies are actually needed)...the copies would then be error free. manually filling out forms is just asking for trouble. the fallibility of humans is the problem...the only problem! they say they want to reduce the number of forms from three to two. why do you need two forms? have one permanent hardcopy for the files, and then simply enter the numbers once into a notebook.
