Camelot, the company that operates the UK National Lottery, is trumpeting its first online lotto millionaire.
The winner has opted for only partial publicity, meaning all that can be revealed is where they come from - Edinburgh.
What has been revealed is that the winning sum totalled £5,935,128 (US $10.8 million). The numbers from the March 20 drawing were 13, 21, 37, 42, 46 and 48.
Camelot describes it as the UK's largest ever online gaming win.
"This is fantastic news for the winner and a great day for us as well,' Richard Hurd-Wood, Camelot's Director of Interactive. "Thousands of people are signing up to play Lotto on the net everyday, people who due to their busy lifestyles might not otherwise have the time to buy a ticket. With the simple click of a mouse this lucky player is now a multi-millionaire."
Lotto went online in December 2003 and Camelot emphasises the benefit of email alerts for winners.
Camelot points out that so far £614 million (US $1.12 billion) has gone to the Good Causes fund in unclaimed prizes across all National Lottery games.

I think Powerball/Megamillions should offer this type of online service to buy tickets direct. People out of state will drive (literally for hours) anyway to buy a ticket for a lottery not available in their own state if the jackpot is an obscene amount. Why should anyone want or have to pay $2 or more per $1 ticket for some fly-by-night online operation to do it for you simply because a given lottery isn't on offer in a person's state/country? Those extra dollars (profits to the purchasers) are lost lines that could be bought not to mention the real gamble that the online purchasers are legitimate in the first place. As long as people pay into a game there should be no restrictions where they live. Places like Las Vegas would wither away if they restricted use of their casinos to Nevada residents only. And with more people paying in, the larger the jackpots will be. Powerball/Megamillions should really consider this.

I disagree with almost everything you wrote.
The operations advertised on the left side of this page are not "fly by night" operations. I have personally made sure of that before "recommending" them by listing them here. There are many fly by night operations in the lottery service industry, but they are not one of them. Come to think of it, there are fly by night operations in every industry.
The UK has it a lot easier because they don't have to deal with the separate laws of 50 different states, plus the federal law. Keep that in mind when you oversimplify the situation.
To get past all this legal mumbo-jumbo, I think the reasonable fees charged by the excellent lottery service advertised at the left side of the page is well worth the money.
