Two brothers from Antigo, Wisconsin were jailed Tuesday after they were caught trying to cash stolen lottery tickets.

The Shawano County Sheriffs Department said the tickets were among 2,184 Wisconsin Lottery tickets taken from a burglary at the Remington Oil gas station in Birnamwood about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Police said a front window had been smashed to gain entry to the station.

Police were notified when three young men attempted to cash the stolen tickets here about 10 a.m. Birnamwood Police Chief Doug Carlson and officers from the Antigo Police Department and the Langlade County Sheriffs Department arrested the three.

Police executed a search warrant at a Langlade County home later Wednesday and recovered more than 500 lottery tickets.

Police said more tickets were found in the truck the three men were in.

One man was released from custody after the investigation, said Steve Conradt, chief deputy of the Shawano County Sheriffs Department.

Joshua W. Caffero, 30 was taken to the Shawano County Jail while his brother, Bryan E. Caffero, 18, was jailed in Oconto County.

Shawano County Dist. Atty. Gary Bruno is reviewing reports pending formal filing of charges against the two.

Thieves are sooooo stupid. Lottery tickets are one of the most tracked items for sale in the retail environment. Each pack (and its individual tickets) are tracked from the printer to the warehouse to the store they are sold in. Each ticket has a unique number assigned to it and thus, if they are stolen, all a retailer has to do is to provide the game, pack, and ticket numbers stolen and those tickets are as good as a one way ticket to jail.

Reminds me of the time a few years ago in Northern Virginia where a pair of thieves stole an online terminal in a break-in. I guess they thought they were going to plug it into their home phone line and print their own tickets. Idiots....
