The Florida Lottery announced today the $35 million Florida Lotto jackpot from the January 21 drawing was claimed in the name of the Cruz Family Partnership of Carol City, Florida.

The members of the Cruz Family Partnership include: Euridice Cruz, Edgar Cruz, Edgar Mauricio Cruz, Maria Cruz, Andrea Cruz Munoz, Julian Cruz, and Cesar Cruz.

The Cruz Family Partnership received the jackpot in one lump sum of $20,190,727.74.

The winning Lotto ticket was purchased at Publix, located 18496 N.W. 67th Street in Miami.  The store has received a $10,000 retailer bonus for selling the winning Florida Lotto jackpot ticket.

The winning numbers for the January 21 drawing were: 03-07-14-27-38-40.

Total ticket sales for this jackpot generated approximately $24.8 million for the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund for Florida's schools.  Since 1999, the Florida Lottery has transferred $3.7 billion to the Florida Educational Enhancement Trust Fund.  This brings the Lottery's commitment to education revenue transfers to more than $13 billion to date.  The Florida Lottery was created by constitutional amendment in 1986 for the purpose of enabling the people of our state to benefit from significant additional moneys for education.

The Cruz Family Partnership is the 132nd Florida Lotto winner to purchase a winning ticket in Miami-Dade County.  The partnership is the 742nd Lotto winner since 1988.  The jackpot for the next Florida Lotto drawing Saturday, January 31, is estimated at $7 million.

Is a partnership or trust the only way to share a single ticket? If I split a ticket with a friend, would the lottery agree to split it into 2 checks, and then is the IRS okay with each person paying separate taxes?

I think they frown upon that, and look at it as a gift and tax it again with gift tax. I wonder why the Cruz family didn't just remain anonymous? That's a no brainer for me. But back to sharing with a friend, they try and tax you twice unless you have some sort of proof of each person contributing to the purchase of the ticket.

In Ohio winnings of small amounts can only be claimed by one person, but for jackpot amounts, more than one person can claim the prize as part of a group or pool.  They are provided forms by the state for each one separate tax information and each gets a separate W-G form and has to pay taxes on his/her share of the winnings.  I think most states have a similar policy, and the information is at their lottery website.
