Officials from the S.C. Education Lottery made their way to Clover Shop & Save on Thursday with a $50,000 check the store on U.S. 321 earned for its part in selling a winning Powerball ticket.
A Concord, N.C., resident won half of a $221.5 million lottery jackpot on New Year's Eve. Norman Shue bought 20 tickets Dec. 31, about 12 hours before the drawing, in what turned out to be the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot ever.
The other winning ticket was sold in York, Pa.
State lottery director Ernie Passailaigue presented the check Thursday to Coit McCarter, owner of the Clover store. McCarter and Passailaigue posed with a big check, but McCarter said that was just for show. Lottery officials gave him a real check to take to the bank.
"I'd like to get another one next week, too," McCarter said. "I told them they could come back with a check every week if they wanted to."
Instead of honoring just the clerk who sold the winning ticket, McCarter said 10 percent of the total prize would be split among the store's 11 employees.
"They work hard," McCarter said.
That's especially true now at a store with a winning record and another Powerball jackpot on the rise. Saturday's estimated jackpot is $55 million, according to the Powerball Web site.
