Today is the first day for high school students to begin applying for Tennessee lottery scholarships.

Students can submit their application for Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarships (TELS) using a free federal student aid program to qualify for up to $4,000 in scholarships per academic year.

Tennessee is using a federally-sponsored program called Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA,  to determine students eligibility for grants, scholarships, loans and financial aid.

To apply, you can get an application from your high school counselor, university financial aid office, or the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation.

You can also apply online and speed up the process. All you need is a personal identification number, which will serve as an electronic signature. To register online and to get a PIN number go to http://fafsa.ed.gov.

The processing time for hard copy applications is four to six weeks. If you apply online, it takes about a week.

To increase your chances of receiving a scholarship, you're encouraged to apply by February 15.

Students who qualify for TELS could earn up to $4,000 in scholarships per academic year from lottery money.

In the first year of TELS, scholarships are available to college freshmen from the high school class of 2003 and high school seniors entering college in fall 2004 who meet ACT and GPA requirements.  Additionally, home-schooled students and GED students may qualify.  Students attending Tennessee public institutions or Tennessee private institutions accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) may receive TELS funds.
