The year may be winding down but Powerball is gearing up. That's because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Wednesday's drawing, pushing the jackpot to an estimated $170 million. That's currently the largest lottery jackpot in the world.
The $170 million jackpot would rank as the 7th largest Powerball jackpot ever. The cash option for the Saturday, December 27 drawing will be an estimated $92.1 million.
There were no jackpot winners Wednesday but 1,282,948 players across the nation won a total of more than $8.6 million in prizes in America's Game.
This current jackpot run started with the Saturday, November 8 drawing. The drawing on Wednesday was the 14th consecutive draw without being hit. More than 6.7 million Powerball players across the nation have won a total of more than $59 million in cash prizes since this jackpot run started in early November.
This is the fourth time this year and the fifth time in the last thirteen months that Powerball has crossed over the $100 million mark.
The numbers drawn were: 1, 6, 31, 34, 44 and the Powerball was 25. The Power Play multiplier was 3.
Ten players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Arizona, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota (2), New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. The winning South Carolina player purchased the Power Play option, multiplying their prize by 3 for a total win of $300,000.
Ninety-one players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Thirteen of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $15,000.
More than 107,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 3 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.
Players purchased more than 44 million tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night.
The lotteries sold $1.6 billion in Powerball tickets in 2002. That translates into more than $480 million for worthwhile state projects.
Hopefully I will be going to the Oregon Lottery Office on the 29 to collect my 170 million bucks. It has been a nice run but I think my ticket will end the Powerball drought the smaller states have been under. I could use a vacation to Las Vegas!
