Mark Peters can partially scratch up his recent bout of luck to waiting for his father, Mick, to show up at a Bandon convenience store.

While waiting for his dad at the Bandon Quick Mart last Friday, the 30-year-old bought a newspaper and an Oregon Lottery Scratch-it ticket, something he does a few times a month.

Quickly rubbing off the metallic areas on the ticket, Peters discovered he hadn't won a penny.

But Mick Peters still hadn't showed up at the store.

Mark pulled out the $2 he had left in his wallet and bought another.

This time, he uncovered a royal flush in the fourth hand on his "Let it Ride" ticket and hit the jackpot - $20,000 to be precise.

"It's a lot of money," Mark said Wednesday night in a phone interview from his Bandon home. "It was pretty excited. I couldn't believe it."

When Mick arrived a few minutes later, Mark told his dad about his good fortune. Mark, who works as a barber at his dad shop, then made plans to drive to the Lottery's Salem offices that day.

"Dad said, 'Everyone will understand,'" Mark said with a chuckle.

Mark said he and his wife, Kisa, used the winnings to pay off some bills and start college funds for their three children - 8-year-old Shawn, 6-year-old Krista, and Andrew, 5.

"The rest that's left over is our cushion," he said. "In case something breaks down or something like that."

Mark said word has already spread throughout the community and people have congratulated him on his luck.

"People have told me that I've given them inspiration (to buy a ticket)," he said with a laugh. "I can't believe that was the one. I really got lucky!"

Mark wasn't the only Coos County resident to win some money from Lottery games.

Charleston resident Debra Jackson won $5,000 in the "Harley-Davidson®" Scratch-it game on Aug. 7. She bought her ticket at the Old General Store in Charleston.

Coos Bay's Donald Powell received $6,066 after matching five of the six numbers in the Aug. 23 Megabucks drawing. His ticket, which he also purchased at the Old General Store in Charleston, was one of 13,822 winners from that drawing.
