A former lottery employee who is the son of state Rep. John Scott was charged Thursday with taking more than $1,000 in promotional funds from the South Carolina Education Lottery.
John L. Scott III was arrested about 3 p.m. Thursday and charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent, according to State Law Enforcement Division spokeswoman Kathryn Richardson.
Scott received South Carolina Education Lottery promotional funds in the form of $25 American Express certificates as an employee of the lottery between March 2002 and May 2003, according to the arrest warrant.
The warrants say Scott, 27, converted the money to his own use and gave the money to Kevin L. Wilson of Columbia. Wilson, 33, was arrested Thursday and charged with receiving stolen goods less than $1,000, Richardson said.
Rep. John Scott, D-Columbia, had a key role in setting up the state lottery, which began in January 2002. He had no comment Thursday on his son's arrest.
Lottery spokeswoman Tara Robertson had no comment on the arrests, saying the agency did not want to impede an ongoing investigation.
