Thousands of tickets match popular 'triple'

By Kate Northrop

Thousands of North Carolina Lottery players across the state were no doubt celebrating when the combination 5-5-5 was drawn in Pick 3 on Tuesday evening.

The triple combination 5-5-5 racked up a grand total of $4.3 million in winnings for lottery players who chose the three digits. In all, according to the Lottery, 10,726 winning tickets matched all three numbers in the evening draw on Oct. 19.

That beats out the $3.6 million in prize money that North Carolina players won in July when the game produced the numbers 0-0-0.  9,307 winning tickets were produced in that drawing.

"When 'trips' occur, they generally produce big wins," the Lottery said in a press release. "That's because combination of three of the same numbers are some of the most popular combinations played."

Those who wagered fifty cents and matched all three numbers on Tuesday night won $250, while players who wagered $1 roped in a $500 prize. Winners have 180 days to claim their prizes.

The odds of matching all three numbers in a Pick 3 drawing are 1 in 1,000. Pick 3 drawings take place twice a day, first at 3:00 pm EST and then again at 11:22 pm EST.

Nice pay day.  Lucky for them they still have Mechanical Ball Drawings.   Hate that we switched to RNG...certainly we won't revert back to the popular MBD!

Too bad Kentucky lottery wouldn't raise their cap out so more of us could play and potentially win.

Congrats to all the winners, hitting on trips is always more fun for some reason. Cheers

How do you know if your state uses balls or a number generator? I know some times Michigan doesnt show the drawings, but some times they do. If my state switched to a number generator, I'm done playing here

You can tell that LOs there in NC run their games with honesty.. just look at how many times Todd has ran stories about how Players are ALWAYS winning Big there..whether it's MM,PB or their in-State proprietary Games...

May have to move to NC..!! Wink

"When 'trips' occur, they generally produce big wins," the Lottery said in a press release. "That's because combination of three of the same numbers are some of the most popular combinations played."

I have to respectfully say that statement is the truth, but not the whole truth. What the NCEL lottery forgot to mention in their press release is that that the reason why so many people are playing so many trips in North Carolina is because the trips are hitting like crazy there and have been all year long (see chart below). There are 1000 possible lottery draws and 10 of them are trips. That means out of every 100 draws, we expect 1 trip, 1 percent. Therefore, in the Year-to-Date draws in North Carolina, as of the Evening draw when the trips fell, the expected value for that whole time period was 1% of the total number of draws or 1% of 584 = 5.84. So the expected value is about 6. In fact, North Carolina has now drawn trips 12 times this year, twice expectation (actually slightly more than twice because we rounded up from 5.84). Here is the list:

03/02/2021,502,222

03/23/2021,299,111

03/24/2021,555,383

03/28/2021,111,976

04/04/2021,111,879

04/21/2021,194,222

05/07/2021,444,972

05/12/2021,251,666

06/05/2021,555,420

07/09/2021,000,499

08/14/2021,736,888

10/19/2021,252,555

Lottery players aren't stupid. They know when trips are running and they are playing them hard because they are running. So, what the NCEL spokesperson said is true, but it does not meet the courtroom standard of being the "whole truth" for why they had such a large payout on the recent 555 payout.

Very interesting and well thought of.

On a side note I see IGT fixed the $5 pick 3 where it places 50 cent bets 000-999 on their self serve machines.   Had asked that if it was sold out to grey it out and now does.  Maybe the similar pick 4 will be fixed too since it is literally always liability limited...we shall see.
