Closed store leads player to a luckier one

By Kate Northrop

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. — A Massachusetts lottery player visited a gas station to play the lottery but upon finding that it was closed instead went elsewhere to win a $10.04 million Megabucks Doubler jackpot.

Stephen Pereira of Fairhaven originally intended to buy a Megabucks Doubler ticket at a nearby gas station, but the retailer was not open for business. Some lottery players with a go-to store might call it bad luck, but for Pereira, this might have been the fateful encounter that earned him a $10 million top prize.

Upon discovering that the gas station store was closed, he went on to visit the 7-Eleven convenience store on Huttleston Avenue in Fairhaven and purchased a Quick Pick ticket for the Megabucks Doubler drawing on Sat., Mar. 20.

That Quick Pick had won him the $10.04 million jackpot, the largest won in the Megabucks Doubler game since Mar. 11, 2017, when an $11.34 million was won on a single ticket, according to the Massachusetts Lottery.

The numbers on Pereira's ticket were 2, 16, 23, 27, 31, and 45.

Pereira visited Lottery headquarters in Dorchester to claim his winnings and chose to receive the cash option prize, which came out to be $8,424,485 before taxes. With the money, he plans on paying off his mortgage and supporting his children.

For selling the jackpot-winning ticket, the 7-Eleven store will receive a $25,000 bonus.

Megabucks Doubler drawings take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 11:20 pm EST. Tickets cost $1 each.

Made up how?   Prove your false statement.

I have one of these tickets to MBD through subscription and had one sent to my LP friend as well, she told me neither one of us won.  I took a picture of my ticket and she keeps up with it since I rarely look @ the ticket!

These types of stories are usually true though there could be some embellishment with a little exaggeration.

Anytime someone wins the lottery they usually make some unsubstantiated story connected to their good fortune. And there's always some reporter eager to write the story. I wouldn't be surprised if the reporter fabricates it. Wait till you read my story when I win the lottery, It's a doozy.

"Anytime someone wins the lottery they usually make some unsubstantiated story connected to their good fortune."

Here is a true story about my lottery win in FL about 15+/- yrs ago.....

I was playing the Fantasy5 game regularly and for awhile there was a set of numbers that were always close in coming up for about a week or 2. I was following them and there seemed(to me) to be a pattern. I was winning a few bucks each day, even hit 4 of 5 a couple times but not getting the 5 of 5 to win the $150-$220K that the jackpot was producing each day for that game. There was always 1/sometimes 2 people that got that days jackpot, except me...Well, one day I hit the 4/5 and so did hundreds of other folks but on that particular day there was no 5/5 winner. Back then they divided the big prize up between the 4/5 winners(not sure if that's done now).I drove over to the claims office in Altamonte Springs and they gave me a check for roughly $860 +/-.

No embellishment, just a straight up true story without anything "unsubstantiated" to my good fortune.

Not everyone makes up a fictitious story "anytime" winning the lottery but strange things do happen to folks every day whether they win a lottery jackpot or not.

I remember a few years ago in Florida, a young woman with kids let an elderly woman go ahead of her on the lotto line and the old lady hits the jackpot. I don't know about the validity of that news clip, for it seems like there is perpetually someone always in front of you.

What do you mean? There is always a story, we are here because we like to hear of people winning against the odds.

I have a good story, one hot morning and I mean hot was on my way to work and decided to stop and play my numbers, I got out of my car and there was a $20 on the ground, I played 419 dollar/dollar for midday and evening.

Now I am 16$ dollars ahead, went to work( I was a lathe hand) and it was hot, so hot by noon we had to shut everything down, we had been dealing with the heat for days, finally around 2 PM, the owner said we could go home and we would get our final 2 hours paid.

Got home and found out I hit the midday straight another $583 dollars, Hubby brought pizza home and I did not have to cook, always a red letter day when I don't have to cook, later that evening 419 falls straight again, another $583 dollars.

This really happened.Was a good day.Party
