A Chicago man just won $20,000 a week for 20 years thanks to a persistent co-worker and his first-ever $20 scratch ticket.

The lucky winner had been playing the Lucky Day Lotto for 18 years but never won a big prize, according to Illinois Lottery officials. The man's co-worker consistently tried to get him to purchase an instant ticket, but he never did — until now.

The man and his co-worker were at Plaza Food & Liquor, at 3459 W. Ogden Ave., when the co-worker convinced him to scratch his first $20 ticket, which turned out to be a winning 20x20 ticket.

"I plan to buy a house and start my own business," he told the Illinois Lottery. "This winning ticket is my chance at living the American dream."

The top prize was $20,000 a week for 20 years, resulting in a total of $20,800,000.

The retailer received a bonus of $208,000.

Thanks to Sarge0202 for the tip.

  Beginner's Luck!  Congratulations!

The persistent co-worker is a friend indeed. A 20-year Annuity. Can you imagine winning $20,000.00 a week for the next 20 years?

I am sure that there is a run on 20x20 tickets.

No running or walking. The game launched September 4, 2012 and that was the last grand prize.

I'm going to miss the game, had a nice overall odds of 1 in 2.71.  That was even better then most 30$ tickets. The current best overall odds ticket is a 30$, 1 in 2.65, ticket released almost 5 years ago. 1 top prize of 10 Million$ left.

They don't make them like they used to.

There for awhile Illinois had put a freeze on lottery wins. I hope he gets what's coming to him.

Congrats on the win! Nice first time scratcher.

I wonder if he will give any money to his (former) co-worker. Without their prodding, he wouldn't have won.

Exactly, he needs to do right by his (former) co worker. It's the right thing to do.Cheers

Chicago people always get the winners, more people there.

It also looks like they are finally allowing anonymous for the bigger winners.

Never thought anyone would win the final prize as game has been out since 2012

I only won $100 on that ticket like twice and lost alot before I stopped playing it

I think all 3 of the 20 x 20 tickets were won in Chicago (I know the last one before this was)

So I say boo to Chicago players winning on this ticket!!!!

Since 2012? I guess the moral of this story is, it's never to late to get into the game.

On the otherhand this co worker, who probably tried & failed to win anything on this very game, knowing it has been around for 7 years, could have urged his friend" to join him " in throwing his money down the drain on this ticket, only to have it backfire.Big Smile
