A woman who found a $1 million winning Virginia Lottery ticket in her husband's backpack said he told her he had thought the ticket was a prank.

Rose Ibarra of Avalon, Texas, told Virginia Lottery officials she and her husband were in Virginia while he worked on a construction project.

Ibarra said she was cleaning out her husband's backpack when he found a Hot Millions Multiplier scratch-off ticket that appeared to be a $1 million winner.

She brought the ticket to her husband, who said it had been given to him by a friend and he had put it in his backpack after scratching it off because he thought it was a joke.

The ticket turned out to be no joke, and Ibarra chose a lump sum option of $561,798 before taxes, rather than taking the full $1 million over 30 years.

The ticket was bought at Wawa, 8800 Brook Road in Glen Allen, which receives a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Hot Millions Multiplier (game #1616) features prizes ranging from $20 up to $4,000,000. Ms. Ibarra is the first player to win the $1 million prize in game #1616, which means two more remain unclaimed. In addition, two $4 million top-prize tickets also remain unclaimed.

The odds of winning the top prize in this game are 1 in 1,305,600. The odds of winning any prize in Hot Millions Multiplier are 1 in 3.0.

Congrats to her , very brave diving into hubby's backpack.

My Hubby's backpack is always full of surprises, dirty socks, half eaten granola bar, dead spiders, mystery fungus, dirt, empty water bottles.  Thud

Wait, what?! Is this story saying someone bought a ticket, scratched it off, thought it was a loser and then gave it to his friend? Then the friend and his wife cashed it? Who bought the ticket?

I know the holder of the ticket is the winner so no controversy there but I want to know more about who bought the ticket.

EDIT: OH! Now I see. He was given the ticket but he scratched it off himself. But why did someone buy and give him a scratch off ticket? I want to know. :)

Yes, this story left a lot more questions than it answered.

Maybe he was into sharing! There is a man that plays pick3/4 at the store I buy may tickets (if hes feeling good about numbers) he sometimes buys a extra ticket to share with me,cashier and others that plays at that store(if we are there at the same time).

I had to read this twice.  I love giving lottery tickets as gifts, sans scratchers, always MM or PB depending on the amount and day of draw.

Don't fellow LP members give lottery tickets as gifts?  What's the big deal?

Bank gave me a pile of Christmas money envelopes.  We're having Christmas dinner here, so in each one goes either a Powerball or Megamillions ticket depending on which one is highest.  Guests love it and you can't go wrong.  If one were to win I'd be OK with that.

It's not a big deal until someone wins a million dollars. Then I'm interested in the backstory. :) The article just left it out.

Now if she found some lingerie or something that belongs to another woman that would teach her from snooping...lol.
