LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan teenager who hit a $500,000 jackpot is giving nearly all of it to his parents.
The 19-year-old from Ingham County won the prize playing the Golden Wild Time instant game. He purchased the winning ticket at a Sunoco gas station in Williamston.
"I scratched (it) off in the store and at first I thought they were playing a trick on me until I saw how excited they were about the ticket," he said in a Friday news release from the Michigan Lottery. "It's just incredible, I can't get the smile off of my face."
The lucky player visited the lottery headquarters in Lansing Friday to claim his prize and share his plans for the money.
"I'm going to keep about $5,000 for myself to invest, and I'm going to give the rest to my parents," said the player. "My parents have done so much for my sister and me, helping them takes a big weight off of their shoulders and mine."

Better that he not make public statements like this and that he see a tax atty. By giving them that amount, not only has he paid taxes on it but his parents will also owe taxes on it, too.
I agree with you. It's too bad my dad died because I would have asked him about this young teen. A lot of people don't realize what there might be and then again nobody knows their situations either. People need to be better educated on certain things. It's nice thing but there are things in between the fine lines. Yet we all may never know.

Smart kid, if he keeps his wits about him, it may turn out right for him. I can think of half a dozen kids that would buy cars & drugs to show that they all grown and can make their own decisions in life.He made a wise move.

Maybe the kid had really cool parents. I know I wouldn't just give it to them (after keeping just a couple, 5k of it).

Given my own life's experiences, it would have been a TOTALLY different story if I was that 19y-o.
So, no way, is there an 'attaboy', or 'good boy' coming from me. That money, though under a million is a big responsibility. You have to be wise, when doing things with it.
Doesn't he plan to leave Michigan? Doesn't he want to settle in better place? His parents may never wish to leave Michigan, with the state's drug/failing reputation.

Why is what he did totally ridiculous? Did you not read " My parents have done SO MUCH for my sister and me" What part of that line do you find absurd? His experience with his parents seem to be different from yours G, but his doing what he considers to be right.His not giving the money to some wealthy preacher whose driving around the neighborhood with a Mercedes or Bmw.
