6th Powerball Jackpot Won in Tennessee

By Todd Northrop

For the sixth time, a Tennessee Lottery player has won a Powerball jackpot — this time it's a $420.9 million grand prize for a very lucky person who purchased a ticket in Lafayette (Macon County).

The incredible ticket, which matched all six Powerball numbers drawn Saturday, Nov. 26, is also the 200th ticket sold by the Tennessee Lottery worth $1 million or more.

The Lottery advises the as-yet unknown ticket-holder to sign the back of the ticket, keep it in a secure location, consult with a financial advisor, and call the Lottery's headquarters in Nashville before coming to claim the prize. The winner has 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim the prize.

Due to increased sales, the original estimated jackpot of $403 million soared to $420.9 million for Saturday's drawing.

This is the second largest overall prize for the Tennessee Lottery — the first was the $528.8 million Powerball prize won by a Munford family in January 2016, who split the $1.58 billion world-record jackpot with winners in two other states.

The winning numbers drawn in Saturday's Powerball drawing were 17, 19, 21, 37, and 44, with Powerball number 16. The Power Play number was 2.

The lump sum option is worth $254.6 million, the 11th-largest US lottery jackpot cash value in history.

In addition to the Tennessee jackpot winner, 4 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Minnesota, 1 from North Carolina, and 2 from Pennsylvania.

Out of the four second-prize tickets, only the North Carolina ticket was purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per play, doubling their prize to $2 million.

Power Play is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered in Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts.

46 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 5 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $100,000, and 6 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $18,034 this drawing.

By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.

Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Powerball jackpot resets to $40,000,000 for the next drawing to be held Wed., Nov. 30.

Still can't understand how a person who lives in a State with a population of 200 people can win the Powerball jackpot. It's one of the mysteries of life.

It's not the number of people that live in a state, but rather the numbers printed on the ticket that matters.

Well played Sir. My take was the old adage, the more tickets sold in the most populous States, the greater the chance that the winner will come from there. In this case, it's quite the opposite.
