$1.5 BILLION: Wednesday Powerball record jackpot still rising

Jan 12, 2016, 11:35 am (282 comments)

Powerball

Cash value nearly $1 billion

By Todd Northrop

Is there anything happening this week that isn't Powerball?

Apparently not, because it seems that everyone in the US is buying Powerball tickets at a frantic pace, forcing officials at the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) to once again raise the Wednesday Powerball jackpot estimate by another $100 million to $1.5 billion.

The cash value of the jackpot is now raised to $930 million. By the time the drawing rolls around Wednesday night, we may be looking at a lump-sum cash payout of more than $1 billion.

Here's another crazy statistic:  The Wednesday cash value is now nearly double of the previous record cash value of $471 million, set by Mega Millions in 2012.

This is the second — and probably not the last — time MUSL has raised the jackpot estimate since it was initially set to $1.3 billion early Sunday morning.

By Monday morning officials had decided that enough tickets were being sold that they raised the estimate to $1.4 billion.  And now just 24 hours later, crazy-fast ticket sales prompted them to again increase the jackpot to $1.5 billion.

Players should watch for further jackpot increases before the Wednesday drawing. Long lines of ticket buyers across the nation are generating lottery ticket sales at unprecedented levels. Players absolutely should avoid waiting until the last minute to buy their their tickets. Because some of those lines are 4 or 5 hours long.

Players looking to purchase tickets at an out-of-the-way store with no lines should immediately download the free Lottery Places app, which is available on all modern mobile phones and computers.  It is the only app on the market that can find lottery retailers in every state and jurisdiction in the United States. So while all those people are waiting in 4-hour lines, a Lottery Places app user can find another retailer a bit further away that may have no line.

Wednesday's jackpot started at $40 million on Nov. 7, 2015, and is the result of 19 drawings with no jackpot winner.

The final jackpot tally will be announced during the live draw show on Wednesday night, although it's still possible the official estimate will be increased again before then.

"This historic Powerball run has players across the country excited to join the fun, driving sales and the jackpot upward, all of which is a tremendous boost for the education programs funded by the Lottery," said Rebecca Hargrove, President and CEO of the Tennessee Lottery.

Although some lottery players (and some in the news media) believe Spain's El Gordo carries the largest lottery jackpot in the world, this is not the case. El Gordo, despite being termed a "lottery" is actually a raffle-style game, and the top prize is always divided between hundreds of winners. It is like a lottery scratch game in which is the total available prize pool of up to hundreds of millions of dollars is split between thousands of winners, and is not considered a "jackpot".

A jackpot is a large cash prize that accumulates until it is won, whereas a prize pool is the total value awarded to all players of a game. Thus, Powerball has the largest jackpot in world history, while El Gordo has the largest prize pool. Some may believe this is splitting hairs, but in the lottery industry it is an important distinction, and unfortunately one that the mainstream news media cares little to differentiate.

Powerball jackpots start at $40 million and roll until the jackpot is won. Players win the jackpot by matching five numbers from a field of 69 numbers and one Powerball number from a field of 26 numbers. Drawings are conducted each Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.

Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com).  The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.

Lottery players are strongly encouraged to go to USA Mega Wednesday night to see the winning numbers. USA Mega remains generally responsive during high-traffic draw nights, even when most other lottery websites are crushed by lottery players all checking their numbers at the same time.

Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all time

Saturday's Powerball jackpot currently stands as the largest lottery jackpot of all time in the United States — and in the world.  The amount of the jackpot may rise even further before the drawing Wednesday night, as lotteries are typically conservative in their initial estimates, and brisk sales will certainly continue to push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.

If nobody wins Wednesday... well, let's not even go there.

What will be the jackpot Sat. if no body wins Wednesday?

PS my apologies if a similar post has been made recently. I just don't have the resources to read hundreds of posts.

This is awesome. I thought it was gonna be won a week ago, but I was wrong. Wow. I am excited to see what this will do to the psychology of lottery players. It has been that JPs don't start really moving until $100 + million. Now that we have seen the "B" word,  seen JPs jump $100 million in a day, and seen what 1 in 292 million REALLY means, when will people really start playing now? That $15 mil. MM jackpot looks pretty sad next to 999 on the billboard near my house (though $15 mil. is a LOT of money!).

I think Mega will soon set their odds at some where around 1 in 310-320 million. We've already seen that 1 in 292 million is winnable.

What with the rest of Tuesday and Wednesday available for the purchasing of tickets you've got to expect this JP to climb a bit more if not a lot more.  The insane thing is that the jackpot rose $427.7M from Wednesday to Saturday and already with the projection of a $1.5Billion JP is a rise of $550.2M so the JP projected climb is already $122.5M more than the last time around.

Of course we all know it's winnable because the new odds were in effect beginning October 7, 2015 and someone won 9 drawings later November 4, 2015 taking down a $144.1M JP.

I just got back from making them need to raise it again before the draw.

I'm ready!

And where are all these lines? I've made over a dozen separate Powerball purchases over the past week and have not stood behind another individual a single time. I cannot imagine having to stand in line for over four hours to buy lottery tickets. I can, however, think of lots of ways to spend all this money.

I think it depends on where you live. Here in NYC there aren't many lines other than the ones that are created when these daily draw players want to recite 20+ combinations to the clerk for Win 3 and Win 4 games. There are so many retailers in NYC as many as 4 per block sometimes but I have seen lines out the door on TV.

NYS Lottery used to have standards and would refuse to let stores be Lotto retailers if another one was within a certain distance. Now it seems they don't care. It seems like as long as you have a high speed Internet connection and enough counter space for a terminal you're good to go.

I was at a store a few months back and the owner had all his scratch offs right by the grill. You could see the grease build up on some of the tickets lol.

Actually no matter how you paint it you still lose.

If the ticket was purchased during the marriage and then the divorce is done and then the party goes ands claims the ticket 50% is still owed to the ex-spouse after the fact.

A Florida Lotto winner many years ago had his daughter from his first marriage claim the ticket and the 2nd wife got screwed big time. Although they were married, she was/is not married to his daughter and she (ex wife #2) lost her legal battle.

Do you honestly think they will let you remain anonymous if you're the sole winner of $1.5 billion dollars?

The winner(s) will get international media attention, which is why I decided to not get anymore PB tickets.

It's already out of control. This should be like the UK lotto, capped, and when it rolls over, excess goes to lower tiers.

A sole winner of this, or, imagine if it rolls over again, will have world-wide attention.....I'd like to win, with 3, 4 or 5 other winning tickets, then maybe you could somehow stay hidden.

I'm guessing that MUSL is being a bit conservative about the advertised jackpot, and that if they're willing to advertise 1.5 we'll see at least 1.6 when it's done. Here are probabilities for 1.6 to 1.8 billion, based on sales of 685,  789, and 894 million tickets. I've seen some conflicting data, so there's some minor wiggle room.

Jackpot Rollover 1 winner 2 winners 3 winners 4 winners 5 winners

6 winners

$1.6 billion 9.59% 22.49% 26.36% 20.60% 12.07% 5.66% 2.21%
$1.7 billion 6.72% 18.14% 24.50% 22.05% 14.88% 8.04% 3.62%
$1.8 billion 4.69% 14.35% 21.96% 22.39% 17.13% 10.48% 5.34%

They wouldn't have a choice. It's law here. Now I can see there being a public uproar and people asking to change it afterwards but that's later on, it wouldn't effect this drawing.

Winning this much would be a blessing but probably more of a curse. You will be hunted to the ends of the earth by everyone from people that want your money to people wanting to interview you and so on. Meanwhile the guy that won the MegaMillions in NY is laughing because no one cares about him or is looking for him. Cool

Idk, Spain got so used to theirs that it's now ingrained in the culture. They don't see anything wrong with jackpots worth over a billion dollars. Yes, a lot more people are almost guaranteed to be winners than with the PB, but look at it this way, at the rate the tickets are selling, I don't think many people are taking issue with the size of it. If MM reacts to this by changing the odds and/or price, this just might be the norm. And those who win anything under $200 million won't even make the news. Which would be a wonderful thing for them.

If you are the sole winner I guarantee that 15min will not be the end. There will be tons of news/reporters trying to get to talk to you for longer interviews, documentary makers, conspiracy cooks, crazies, inventors, scammers, investment salesment, etc. etc.

There are stories of lotto winners getting pounded every day with phone calls, letters, and even harassed on streets.

So yes you need to stay very very anonymous...likely need to change name, appearance, change phone/mailbox/address/etc.

What a boatload of garbage.

Why is everyone so paranoid of being covered, if it even gets to that?
What did you do that makes you so ashamed?  When you win it, you'll have 7.3 billion others jealous of you, for having won, what many countries may not even have.

There isn't a doggone thing I wouldn't disclose about myself, if I was pulled in front of a camera. But I'd have to be the sole or shared winner of the $billy.  Heck, the more I think about it, I'd go on TV if I got the 2nd prize (even though it's not even a full million. Because prize 2 would work well for me.)

Afraid that hordes of people would come to your house?   How do you think Bill Gates feels?  What did he do to deal with it?
Well, whoever wins, that's what the winner has got to do.

Oh, OK, I guess I have being single, on my side.

When you go on Youtube, do you look to see if someone made any videos of you?
If they want to do that, they will.  SO FREAKING WHAT?
Why do you even check?

For instance, I did almost nothing today, but looked at youtube and checked out NOTHING but Jeep videos, and all kinds of 4-wheelers in the mud events. People getting drunk, etc.
I don't have any 4 wheel drive. But, that'll certainly change, if prize 1 or 2 of the $billy comes.

But am I going to remember the fools that got in a fight

Am I going to remember the guy that got punched in the face, in Russia, due to an argument over a car accident?   NO WAY WOULD I EVER WASTE MY TIME.

According to the Texas website, the lottery now is assuming that they will generate $1.141B in revenue, a significant amount of revenue for the member states even when divided among all of them.    The real message of the most recent rollover, where approximately $950M in in revenue was generated, producing 475M tickets, should have been that the lottery is now pretty nearly impossible to win, but many people don't care since the sentence includes "nearly."

It is now also nearly impossible to cover the entire field, although the odds of yet another rollover are decreasing.

The Poisoon distribution probabilities of various numbers of winners, assuming a completely randomized ticket selection, and that 1.141B in revenue is generated, and thus 570M tickets are sold, are as follows:

k, number of winners p(m,k)
0 13.13%
1 26.65%
2 27.06%
3 18.32%
4 9.30%
5 3.78%
6 1.28%
7 0.37%
8 0.09%
9 0.02%

The pretax expectation value is now a robust 1.11, meaning that for the first time since this all began, a Powerball ticket is what can be considered a "good bet."

Dream on, but since the probability that you will really win the whole thing is vanishingly small, don't quit your day job.

Walt Hickey at FiveThirtyEight ran a couple of models. One, similar to yours, has 554m tickets sold and an 85% chance of at least one winner. The other has 1.2b sold and a 98% chance of at least one winner. According to the lower model, there's a natural ceiling at about 600m tickets sold -- there's only so many people willing to put money into the lottery no matter how big it gets. But there's so little data on jackpots this size, who knows?

He says it's not a good bet, though, because his expected value model includes federal taxes. Return of $1.32 on a $2 ticket.

Funny how so many only focus on the potentially negative and taxes, even though the chances of of things happening is minuscule. Not to mention you should already have more money than you will ever need after  a year and on anyway unless you are a complete idiot.  Chances are you will get every payment as it is shown with a 5% increase every year. I don't give a crap about the taxes, I am thinking about how much money I will have after them regardless of what method I take. The PB is not going to go bankrupt, look how much money it makes and how long it has been going on. So this kind of obsessive negative thinking is totally necessary. People are more worried about the taxes than the HUGE principle left. The amount is just so high that it is warping people's minds. But most likely everything will be fine, REALLY fine.

Yeah that is the greed factor of most, the higher it gets the more people want. They sit on here all day and night arguing how to avoid taxes and how horrible it i will be to win. I think about it what an opportunity of a lifetime I will have, and how much money I will have after taxes that I still will never spend. If they are that worried about it and paying taxes they should not even bother playing. Yet we know they are. With that much money taxes and investing is a non-issue as you should never come close to spending the principle even unless you REALLY mess up. As an avid studier of the law of attraction for a very long time now, I focus on the positives and the great things that kind of money will do for me. If you focus on nothing but fear, hardships, taxes etc chances are you will attract all those issues even more so. You may not even win at all then because in your mind you don't really want to anyway because of your preconceived notions. You don't know what will happen until you experience it, and if you are smart and careful you should be very happy for a very long time.

At work in the ever sad Pediatric ICU I chuckle @ how many don't have a clue about the lottery, so have to educate the ones who never played.  Some many questions.  Simplest reply is to go the clerk and say quick pick Powerball with Powerplay and they still don't get it.  Not one of them gripe about the taxes and no negative comments at all.

I tell them all I want is five #'s with Powerplay and I'm out of there.  Been working @ something since 4th grade, retired from the Army 18 years ago and been a Respiratory Therapist @ PICU for just over 18 years.  I said no more ventilators, child abuse, kids dying, parents lying for me.

We are in dire need in a new PICU since we've outgrown this one and the Attendings will say 'when you win the lottery, you can build us a new PICU.'  I chuckle @ them.

Anyhow, negative comments and feelings about the lottery and taxes will only flourish into more negativity, smile and thank whomever/whatever you believe in that you are alive another day.

ALL ABOUT TAX FROM UNCLE SAM

Tax his land, tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.
Tax his tractor, tax his mule,
Teach him taxes is the rule.

Tax his cow, tax his goat,
Tax his pants, tax his coat.
Tax his ties, tax his shirts,
Tax his work, tax his dirt.

Tax his chew, tax his smoke,
Teach him taxes are no joke.
Tax his car, tax his grass,
Tax the roads he must pass.

Tax his food, tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his sodas, tax his beers,
If he cries, tax his tears.

Tax his bills, tax his gas,
Tax his notes, tax his cash.
Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.

If he hollers, tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.
Tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.

Put these words upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom!"
And when he's gone, we won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance tax

Boy I hate to see the lines all day today .

Can your legislatures put this to the people to vote on a lottery?  There was an article about this on LP.  I had to laugh @ the Mississippi leg's who were shown a video of all their folks crossing state lines to play.  Are folks that dumb not to realize people will get tickets elsewhere?  Anyway, good luck to you!

Thrifty: seems you are going all out this drawing as I counted 250 self picks. $500 and quite sometime to fill out all those slips!

i will be using LP's RNG to get me 10 picks to go along with the qp's I have already bought. It will be a long time before I play again so that is my justification for the extra tickets.

Good luck to you as well!

I have a few tickets, I hope I win something, if not the Jackpot!!!!Banana

Good Luck.

Other than Mayberry, where would be a safe place to move to once you got all this money?

.
Well, I'd prefer Mendocino, Ca.

(Lots of nice, white people there, doing their thing.)

2nd Preference: Pretty much anywhere in the Southwest.
Even Scottsdale would be fine.

DO YOU REALLY THINK THRIFTY HAVE DECIDED TO BECOME ONE OF THE FINANCIALLY DESPERATE, IGNORANT, GREEDY AND LAZY PEOPLE PLAYING THE LOTTERY?

already got my tickets in for this payout bonanza. Just the thought of a cash lump sum of over a Billion Dollars gives me goose bumps...Lol

Illinoisdreamer

So how many lines in this drawing have people purchased?

I spent $20 for 10 lines

I really cant justify going any higher when I already have committed $9 weekly to regular Illinois lotto. It also is slightly disturbing to see some people in my area (A poor area) throwing away hundreds or even higher on PB tickets

Not going to get preachy with them but I saw a guy put down $500 on draw and comment he had spent $500 more hours earlier on PB tickets

I spend $9 a week on regular lotto and $20 on scratch offs weekly. The idea someone just spent 2/3 of my yearly Lotto budget on this PB alone (Probably spent more) makes me cringe a bit

This guy who I saw isn't well off and is a regular buying tickets ,, So I really think its a bit concerning to see the hype related to this lotto and how some people seem to be losing there senses given odds

I agree that the "OMG taxes" or "OMG the attention" stuff is a bit much

At end of day you will be rich and set for life while the publicity/attention will fade away like it does for every lotto winner (Unless you do something stupid to get in news)

I know exactly what I would do if I won tonight

1) Get the hell out of my area (Use what little $$$ i currently have to rent somewhere for a few months)

2) Hire professionals (Lawyer/Financial advisor/etc)

3) Claim prize

4) Buy mom + dad new house

5) Set up my sister (+ her family) and brother so they never have to worry about money again

6) Donate to a few charities I always wanted to help

After that I would just sit back and enjoy good life chasing a few modest dreams and finding a hobby to pass the time or start a business

Up here in Toronto a bakery is advertising a free Powerball ticket to the first 500 customers who purchase 20 dollars worth of goods.

From the customer's point of view spending $20 is less than the cost of gas to drive down to Buffalo and back, plus you get baked goods.

Interesting way to drum up business.

It doesn't look like there will be a mid-day jackpot increase today, but the final jackpot tally announced this evening could certainly be more than $1.5 billion.

If there is no Powerball jackpot winner tonight, Saturday's estimated jackpot will be $2 BILLION with a cash option of $1.24 BILLION.

All this frenzy but has anyone asked themselves this question:

"Why do you deserve to win? Why do you want to win so bad?"

What goals do you have? And please, refrain from saying "I'm going to buy a house and a Mercedes"

you don't need a billion to buy a house or a Mercedes :)

I don't think it works that way or else that woman who won the Mega Millions in NC wouldn't have won. She's using her millions to bail her baby daddy out of jail.

Generally I don't care who wins a jackpot because if they paid for the tic, they have skin in the game.

Having said that, please please don't let another Marie win this jackpot.

Why do I deserve to win? Well no one truly deserves anything here involving PB

Why do I want to win so bad? Because I am tired of being poor and certain non controllable aspects of life (Health) helped derail my dreams/hopes long ago

What goals do you have? To take care of my parents and family. My parents for all they have done for me when I needed them and it would be nice to see them never have to deal with financial hardship again

And I currently am a long way from affording a house as financial situation doesn't allow for such a luxury

With all that said I am realistic to odds and only spent $20 because at end of day I know lotto is about luck and not deserving. Many good people have won and many rotten people have won

At end of day you wont win if you dont play and that applies to everyone whether you are a frequent big time player or a low $$$ now and then player

I'm handicapped so I have free time. I'm using my neighbors computer right now because I don't have my own. I did manage to purchase a single ticket. Do I deserve to win? I figure anyone that buys a ticket deserves it as much as the next person. You can't win if you don't play but anyone that puts their money into the pot deserves a chance.

Last Saturday night, I had a nightmare that I won. I think all my fears collided: kidnappings, threats, family breaking up, you name it.

You know...now that I think about it, I wonder how many newspaper articles I read before bed that were all negative winner stories. That would explain that dream!

Yet, I am buying less tickets this time. When no one won on Saturday, it psychologically made me realize how bad the odds are. I spent about $30 and my husband spent $20. This time I'm spending maybe $12. That way, at least I still have a chance but I'm not going to blow a wad of cash on it. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be.

And I'd like to win to prove that dream wrong!

(Note: just found out hubby bought bought $20 again. Oh well!)

This is a real possibility. Under the old odds we would have likely had a winner a week ago. Seems like we may be reaching the ceiling on ticket sales for a drawing, cause the jackpot amount hasn't increased so far today. Probably will go up at drawing time. I also suspect that a lot of people went all in on Saturday's drawing and can't spend as much for tonight's.

One-Day

This jackpot won't be won until Wednesday the following week.  Players have thrown millions at it and they got disappointed when they didn't win.  Interest has died down a bit.  She will roll.  The jackpot will reach $2+ billions.

How many combination has been sold far for the powerball tonight?

Ron5995

The restaurant story seems a hoax, but whatever.

Around 80% of all combinations to be sold by draw time. However, actual number of tickets sold could be upwards of 500 million, since many combinations will be duplicated. From what I've read, over 400 million tickets were sold in the past drawing with about 75% combination coverage.

The jackpot estimate is still at $1.5 billion annuity / $930 million cash. Surprising it wasn't raised today. Are sales slumping?

I don't know, but I'm guessing if they raised the projection again, the cash value might go over a billion, and they don't want to be wrong about that.

Ridley

Just noticed Mega Millions went up by $7 million, not the usual $5 million. after last night's drawing. I wonder if that's a sign of lottery fever increasing sales of other games, or of some percentage of infrequent Powerball players requesting tickets for the wrong game.

After getting five lines in each of the last two drawings, I've put less into tonight's: $6. Sure hope I win, but not expecting anything!

The craziness hasn't happened at any of the other draws at these places. So I'm really surprised to see there has been no bump to $1.6B. Either they over estimated the sales on the previous increases or people have finally run out of residual cash and are buying fewer tickets per person.

If I for sure knew the winning numbers, I'd buy 10 or 12 tickets with the same numbers to make sure I got a majority share even if 1 or 2 other tickets were sold.  That would make it easier to get most of the money to the charities of your choice without paying taxes.  Just send them the tickets anonymously, and pay taxes only on the one ticket that I claim for myself.

However, if they put out 1.6 billion and it's only 1,580,000 come draw time the media will ask what's the deal?

Anyone ever have this happen?  I asked the clerk for five Powerball quick picks, she hits the button but they didn't print.  She checks the terminal and says the numbers were generated but wouldn't print.  She tries several different things trying to get them to print without success.  The clerk then calls her manager.  About 10 minutes later the manager shows up in her pajamas (it was somewhat late).  Does a few things and gets a ticket of the numbers to print, but the ticket has a banner on the bottom that says not a valid ticket.  She runs a transaction report and the numbers match the most recent on the transaction report (didn't even know they could do that).  She then uses that to run me an identical set of numbers and states she will be required to call the lottery office to report the error so they don't lose the money for the ticket that wouldn't print but registered on the transaction sheet.  I would like to note the clerk and manager could not have been any nicer, half the reason I waited so long (about 30 minutes) for a ticket.

Personally i wouldn't play those numbers as im really unlucky, and you're guaranteed not to win anything just like I do.  my real advice is what ever you play try not to repeat any numbers, and cover as many of the whole set of possible numbers as possible. ie dont buy the same numbers multiple times, unless you are trying to annoy your ex.

BS "Deserving" has nothing to with winning the lottery and what you currently have is irrelevant. I have the Internet but also work online all day and night to pay for it. I could make the argument that people on here are more deserving since they are die-hard lottery plays and have probably spent more than regular people. Also you have no idea what people are doing and how much they are helping others either. But none of that necessarily makes you more deserving than anyone else. This is the lottery not reward from God which past drawings proved that all types win bad and good. I have done a lot of good also for a very long time and cold do a lot more good with this as well. But I am not obligated to either that is my choice.

Yeah like that story on The Curse Of The Lottery where the Nebraska meatpacking plant workers won (8 of them) and the guys they put in charge of purchasing the tickets were immigrants, one from Vietnam (who had the tickets in hand when they won) and the other a dude from the Congo.  The Vietnamese guy's sister is on the show stating that they checked the tickets over and over and over by calling the lottery headquarters.  Shows that even though they heard the numbers right the first time they made absolutely sure it would not be a false alarm. They had the record jackpot at the time $365 Million.

A lot of people just wait till the next day to check their tickets but I bet there are a lot of people staying up late this Wednesday night to see if they are the winners.  If they do win they are guaranteed to have a sleepless night if not nights.....hehehe

Personally, I think everything happens for a reason, so anyone who wins is "deserving"...karma. Doesn't mean I understand or even agree with all that happens, but I like to think that the Universe runs on a much higher intelligence than I possess, so even though I don't like this setup and all the things that occur, there must be a good reason. :)

Do you do marketing, or web design? I also work online. :)

Same hereSad

Congrats to the winner in CA.

Also, called it at "1,580,000" it was in fact $1.586 BILLION!

I am going out on a limb and say that no one is going to win the Jackpot tonight. I don't think anyone will win the jackpot until January 23, 2016.

I hope that was a strong limb one winner in CA. LOL Same old same old, no one here wins and then the fever dies down and the forum goes back to crickets. Back to reality, see you in a few months. LOL

mnsweeps

I bought a few tickets yesterday in Chino Hills CA but mine did not win anything :-( I won't be able to sleep if winner bought from the same place I did... :-(

Assuming it's a sole winner they will walk with $594,034,000 after taxes in CA which has no state tax. Nice chunk of change!

Suzy-Dittlenose

I got the Powerball number 10 on five different tickets for tonight's draw.

Chino Hills is in the Los Angeles area, near Riverside.

I won $4

Guess I will probably either buy a regular Illinois lotto QP or $4 worth of for life scratchoffs ($500 for life cost $1 or $1000 for life which cost $2 each)

I am just glad I did not spend much on this and no longer have to keep spending $2.00. I plan on winning cash for life anyway soon and almost did not twice. ($1,000 a DAY for LIFE $365,000 annually) After taxes about $273,000 a year which is plenty for me. Or the Mega Millions as well.

No anonymous claiming to boot. If they're the only winner the media sure won't back down on finding out every detail of their life.

CA does have a state tax.  Lottery winnings however are not taxed.

If true, thank goodness. Soon as jackpot resets back to $40 million ($0.04 billion), I have no reason to play Powerball again for some time, if ever.

There are various Powerball simulators out there. Ran over $1 million through one of them, and the highest prize I won was $100 a bunch of times. Lost over 90%. That was with imaginary money, so no real loss. However, for players who wagered heavy for real, many won't do that again anytime soon unless the jackpot reaches super historic levels, such as $2+ billion annuity. A billion is so yesterday Sleep

Be very interesting to see what MUSL comes up with, because going ever higher doesn't seem a viable path. Many causal players have had their fill of Powerball and won't be back anytime soon. Many perceive it as a ripoff, but played anyways to be part of history; for the "dream" of winning.

They are already showing live video of the 7-eleven that sold the winning ticket. I can't make this up.

Many will play now as it is more of a relief and less burden and you won't be so famous if you win $40 million. But it makes more sense cost wise to play MB's for better odds and only paying half as much. I would love to win the $40 million though next draw so I would be completely anonymous while they are still looking for the $1.6 billion winner. LOL But the cost is not worth it as much as the MB now. So they would be smart not to change it.

The Powerball simulators are for people good at math but poor at insight.  "I play Powerball to make a profit by winning lower-tier prizes," said no lottery player ever.  You play Powerball to have a chance, however slim, of winning a huge jackpot.

Don't know why it is, whether people buy a subscription, people cash in and buy more tickets, or people buy tickets for the big jackpot late, but the $40 jackpot after a nice run has healthy sales typically.

Seems like there's no more winners? I'm going to guess the one in California was a pool ticket

Point is Powerball isn't just difficult, it's near impossible to win. For players wagering small amounts, it's simply entertainment - most fully expect to lose, or at best, win a few dollars. Casual players are, in large part, who drive large jackpots. Most won't be playing again anytime soon until there's an overly compelling reason to toss money away for a 1 in ~292 million chance at a "dream".

MUSL has a challenge on their hands to keep sales up. Changing the matrix again to make it ever more difficult and/or raising the price doesn't seem a viable strategy, but who knows. Maybe it will work. A year ago, few would have imagined a $billion+ annuity jackpot and here we are.

Welcome to the lottery industry.  Every single game (not just Powerball) has to change periodically in order to keep sales up.  This is nothing new.  MUSL has been doing a good job making changes to Powerball over the years that have kept it at the top of the food chain.

They changed the matrix in October with the goal of creating huge jackpots and boost lagging sales...worked like a charm.

Not seeing anything on FL or TN sites or twitters so we'll have to see about that report.

Edit: NBC is now saying the same!

Just hoping I matched 5

sirbrad's avatarsirbrad

The problem is that it is really hard to justify playing for $40 million and up as this drawing showed how hard it is to win so most will just wait until it clombs up again which will make it a long slow climb. Funny how some were saying 25 plus winners lol. Lucky to even be one. I would have been rerally skeptical if an anonymous state won. I want to see that fae and name now. Might be a pool too making it less dramatic. A lot of rich people in CA I am betting one of them won it. Hey aren't you the billion dollar jackpot winner? Leaving

joshuacloak's avatarjoshuacloak

Fun fact, TN players do not care about the new odds.

https://www.lotterypost.com/news/296695

TN had the winning Powerball ticket on Nov. 4, 2015, draw and won the $144.1 million jackpot.

That's 2 and 0 for us beating the higher odds matrix now. We own this new game.

Can we go 3 and 0? I hope so.

Also, unlike the poor suckers left to the media in CA/FL, we can remain anonymous here via the trust/ LLC route. The 144 million winner(s) already did so. (Someone used their brain for once. We always could remain anonymous.)

Am hoping this new TN  winner does the same thing as last one. GO TN players!

Also, all 3 have no state tax on the winnings. Wink

JAMORA's avatarJAMORA

Which is why they made it harder to win....jackpots grow quicker ( no slow climb)....and bigger....and then EVERYONE plays, not just the usual wagerers...not sure if I'll ever buy more than one ticket of PB or MM again.... I'll still play the better odds games....
