AUSTIN, Tx. — The Texas Lottery Commission today reported record results for fiscal year 2013, its best year for sales and revenue in the Lottery's 21-year history.

Sales of $4.376 billion topped the previous sales record of $4.19 billion set in 2012 and resulted in a total contribution of $1.214 billion to the state of Texas, the Lottery's single largest transfer of revenue to the state, including a contribution of $1.149 billion to the Foundation School Fund.

"This is the 10th consecutive year that the Texas Lottery generated more than $1 billion in contributions to the state of Texas," said Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas Lottery. "We are thrilled to have surpassed our previous revenue record and I want to thank all of our players, retailers, vendors and staff for this outstanding achievement."

The Texas Lottery's sales for fiscal year 2013 saw an increase of $185.5 million over sales for fiscal year 2012 with increases across its game portfolio. Scratch-off ticket sales totaled more than $3.22 billion, the highest instant ticket sales in Texas Lottery history. Sales for the Texas Lottery's draw games, which include Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto Texas, Texas Two Step, Pick 3, Daily 4, Cash Five and All or Nothing totaled more than $1.15 billion, the highest draw sales since fiscal year 2004.

Sales of the Veterans Cash scratch-off game resulted in $6.2 million for the Fund for Veterans' Assistance, which is administered by the Texas Veterans Commission. Other Texas Lottery funds, including unclaimed prizes, resulted in a transfer of $59.9 million to other state programs.

In addition to robust sales, the Texas Lottery's careful spending kept administrative expenses to an all-time record low of 4.4 percent of fiscal year 2013 sales.

Texas Lottery players had a great year as well, with a record $2.77 billion collected in cash and merchandise prizes, surpassing the past record of $2.63 billion set in fiscal year 2012.

For the state's more than 17,000 Texas Lottery retailers that collect a five percent commission on every lottery sale, those commissions amounted to a record $218.9 million in 2013.

On top of the record-setting sales, prizes, commissions and revenue increases, other highlights for fiscal year 2013 include:

  • In January, the Texas Lottery surpassed $15 billion in transfers to the Foundation School Fund.
  • Texas saw its first ever Powerball jackpot prize winner and its 10th Mega Millions jackpot prize winner.
  • The world-record $590.5 million Powerball jackpot for the May 18 drawing and other large Powerball jackpots.

"We are extremely pleased with the results of the last fiscal year," said J. Winston Krause, chair of the Texas Lottery Commission. "The Texas Lottery continues to set new standards of excellence in its mission to generate revenue for the state of Texas, and we're looking forward to continued success."

Scratchers are hugely popular in Texas. Instant ticket sales are nearly 3 times larger than draw sales. They raked in over $60 million just last week alone.

Bloody hell, that's an insane aount of money. Can't even wrap my brain around that much. I'd love to see the numbers on NJ, GA and CA.

Congratulations! I am sure a lot of government educational projects will be funded because of their revenue. I agree that they have to commend their staff for doing a great job. I hope their revenue will be higher next year.

B2B, how I miss you so, let me count the ways,

DeadDeadDead

Three ways is all.

What is puzzling to me, is that Texas would report record breaking sales in 2013 EVEN B4 the year has ended.

Seems like a pre-meditatated accounting fix if you ask me.  I mean did these sales even include the recent MM buying frenzy? Of course not!!!  (BTW, That was a rhetorical question for those who still use words instead of FB dumbspeak and texting BS.  )
