A 34-year-old Wisconsin Rapids woman authorities say stole almost $30,000 from her Saratoga employer and used some of the money to buy lottery tickets faces related charges in Wood County Circuit Court.

Sanya M. Bernal is charged with felony theft in a business setting. If convicted, she faces a maximum of six years in prison. She is scheduled to make her initial appearance July 22 on the charges.

According to the criminal complaint, Bernal was working for Saratoga Mini Mart, 8810 Highway 13 S., Saratoga, from Sept. 3 through Jan. 10. During that time she had an unusually high number of voids, about 60 a day, on the cash register.

The store's manager told authorities Bernal would scan items, take the customers' money and give them change, according to the complaint. Afterward, she would void the sale and use the money to purchase lottery tickets or put the money in her pocket.

Bernal took $29,972 from the convenience store during her time there, according to the complaint, and $13,177.26 worth of the thefts were captured on video surveillance.

Bernal told authorities she didn't remember taking the money and did not remember why she had so many voided transactions, according to the complaint.

Wow. It took over 4 months for someone to notice 60 voids a day? The shop keep should be on trial.

cut her hands off!

She clearly has a addition problem and if its her first offence she needs probation.

"Bernal told authorities she didn't remember taking the money and did not remember why she had so many voided transactions, according to the complaint."

Who could remember all those infractions? It must be like a whirl wind in her mind.

All she had to say was "I forgot" per Steve Martin.

Sanya M. Bernal has nothing on Annie J. Donnelly of NYC who stole a total of $2.3M from her employer to buy lottery tickets. Annie was 38 and this female Sanya is 34. Perhaps Sanya would have bested Annie had she not got caught in the next 4 years. Perhaps not. Ugh criminals irritate me!

I might be able to explain why the shopkeep kept her on so long but I'd have to see a picture of her first.
