Texas Lottery

Increases Pick 3 prizes by 20%

By Todd Northrop

AUSTIN, Tx. — The Texas Lottery Monday is bringing back the Pick 3 Green Ball promotion, which gives Pick 3 players a chance to increase their prizes by approximately 20 percent.

"Pick 3 has consistently been one of our most popular drawing games, and we believe this promotion will only increase the excitement around this game," said Texas Lottery Commission Executive Director Gary Grief.

The promotion begins Monday, April 4 and runs through Saturday, April 30.  There is no extra cost, and players purchase their Pick 3 tickets just like they normally do.

This Green Ball bonus-draw promotion will follow the same format as the previous promotion held in October 2010.

Five white balls and one green ball will be placed in a drawing machine.  One ball will be randomly selected after each Pick 3 day and night drawing.  When a green ball is drawn, all Pick 3 prizes will increase by approximately 20 percent for that drawing.

If a white ball is selected, it will be removed from the drawing machine, increasing the chances of the green ball being selected in the next drawing.  After the green ball is drawn, all five white balls plus the green ball will be reloaded into the machine for the next drawing.

The Green Ball promotion will only apply to the Pick 3 base game and will not affect prizes for the Sum It Up add-on feature.

Pick 3 odds are one in 167 to one in 1,000.  Odds of selecting the green ball range from one in one to one in six, depending on the number of white balls in the drawing machine for a given drawing.

Why did Texas do a green ball promotion? When the green ball comes out in Illinois, they will get a second chance at Pick 3.

It has to be green to cover the heavy weight it carries! - It's to bring a way to have people buy more. When people see green they think money, its just a TLC perception and having people believe, it's giving back.

I am going to play but with caution.

This isn't what I thought it would be.

Illinois has a "Green Ball Double Draw" a couple of times a year. Same thig with white balls and a green ball in the bowl, but if the green comes up an additioinal Pick 3  is drawn, so it's like getting two draws for the price of one.
