DES MOINES, Iowa — A Marshalltown, Iowa, man who won $1 million in the Powerball lottery last year has been charged with supplying alcohol to a minor and prescription drug possession.

Marshalltown Police Assistant Chief Brian Batterson says Ricky Rushton was arrested early Tuesday after officers responded to a complaint about underage drinking at his business, Memories Banquet Hall.

Batterson says Wednesday that officers found an underage employee at the business who was intoxicated.

Rushton was arrested for supplying alcohol to a minor. He was also charged with possession of a prescription drug and violating a city liquor license ordinance.

Rushton on Wednesday called his arrest "a big misunderstanding." He says he's in the process of hiring an attorney "to get this cleared up."

Anyone at the business could have been supplying it to the kid or the kid came to work drunk...seems like a set up.

I am not sure about the possession of prescription drugs though...that might be on him.

I remember watching this guys check acceptance and an 'after the winning checkup', he seemed like a good guy. He had bought a building and turned it into his catering business and used it as a banquet hall, as well.

the kid could have come to work drunk or stole the liquor, this needs more investigating. most business people don't want the hired help drunk especially when a reputation is at stake.

Plus since it is a catering business they most likely have alcoholic beverages at the building. The kid could have easily snuck some. I've worked at a restaurant before and it would have been easy to get wine, beer or liquor.

I found the article and video link to their recent update about him from May 7th, but the Iowa Lottery website has since deleted both (located the cached article which contained the YouTube video which has since been removed by the user [the Iowa Lottery]).

Wow, you win $1Million 2nd place LUMP-SUM prize, walk away with far less (apx. $600K) after paying county, state, and fed taxes, invest in a business (of which 80% close within 2-5 years), hire employees which causes you to payout more money, a short-term-thinking employee causes loss of more money to the state/county and lawyer(s).

Now, in an alternate reality, I wonder where this winner would have been if they had taken investment courses for 3 months, and then had began investing their same, after taxes $600K, without investing in a new business and without hiring any employees (one/two who was possibly the whistle blowers, thinking that there were VAST amounts of money available to handle a lawsuit, and not caring if a few jobs were lost as a result of a business possibly being forced to shut down eventually).

I agree. I used to work as a busboy/dishwasher in a restaurant/bar when I was a kid and I used to drink beer in the cooler all the time. The boss would have fired me immediately if he had ever found out about it.

I justify it as a "youthful indiscretion" like the politicians do. Maybe I should say I made a "bad choice" instead. No wait... "bad choices were made".

Wait a minute... "Mistakes were made!" Yeah, that's the ticket. That makes it sound like somehow it wasn't all my fault and I didn't do it on purpose.

I wish I could say I was "overserved" like Kennedy in Rhode Island but I was the only one there.

Wait a minute! I didn't drink the beer at all!

"I misspoke!"

As hard as money is to come by... to read something as stupid and gut-less as this... is like taking a $2 bill and flushing it down the toilet.  He didn't need to win.  Give the money to someone else who would put it to better use.  GOOD GRIEF!!!Rant
