Mega Millions: $224 million lottery drawing tonight

Mega Millions

1:24 p.m. - Updated states that will be added in May

Tonight across the United States, millions of lottery ticket holders will be hoping to match all of the Mega Millions winning numbers to win a $224 million jackpot.

The lump-sum cash value of the massive prize is $138.1 million, eclipsing the $124.8 million Powerball jackpot cash value won last week by a convenience store clerk from Missouri.

Tonight's jackpot is the result of 13 consecutive drawings without a top-prize winner.  The current jackpot run-up started on March 16 as a $12 million grand prize.

Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs.

In the latest Mega Millions drawing that took place this past Tuesday night, there was no jackpot winner, but 13 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $250,000 prize: 1 from Arizona, 4 from California, 1 from Georgia, 2 from Illinois, 1 from Massachusetts, 1 from New York, 1 from North Carolina, 1 from Oklahoma, and 1 from Pennsylvania.

The Mega Millions annuity jackpot estimate was then raised $33 million from its previous amount of $191 million. The cash value was raised by $20.9 million, from its previous amount of $117.2 million.

The next Mega Millions drawing will take place Friday evening, tonight, at 11:00 pm EDT.

Mega Millions is currently offered for sale in 38 states, plus Washington, D.C.  Two more Mega Millions states will be added in May.

  • Starting May 9, the 39th Mega Millions state, Maine, will be added, with its first eligible drawing taking place on Tue., May 11.
  • Starting May 16, the 40th Mega Millions state, South Dakota, will be added, with its first eligible drawing taking place on Tue., May 18.

For a complete set of game descriptions, results, history, and all questions regarding Mega Millions, lottery players are encouraged to visit USA Mega (www.usamega.com), a Web site that caters to the Unites States's two multi-state lottery games, Powerball and Mega Millions.

Wonderful, I am a fan of those "no-lottery-tax" states!Hyper

Unfortunately, my state takes its withdrawal of 3% (no neighboring state is less or no tax).  Consequently, I and my three over 18+ year aged family members would split different percentages, ending ending up with a cash value, after state and fed income taxes, walk-away of approximately $85.76 million!  I'm thrilled to begin spending this powerful amount of financial wealth!  Come to me, tonight, MegaMillions jackpot monies!

at corrent marketed amount in cash,

take 35% away"max upper tax cap for 2010"

you have just have over $89,700,000 take away lawyer/legal fees

you have at lest just over  89m bucks wired to your specal bank account

god with that amount

, i would traval the world, in luxury and first stop

,  enjoy the golf coast and their seafood before supply , before it gets nuked by the recent oil spill that destory it for years to come

then off to all the themparks, i hear six flags  for like 1200 bucks for 4 people,  will  give you your very own vip tour guide for the day, who let you skip all lines for rides,

hell with casino trips to boot,

, you could even write off your lost bets,

long as you do it the same year as you won the lotto prize

,gambling write offs are allowed up to the amount they tax gambling wins that year

, aka the jackpot win, so bet away,  irs is the losers here!

onless  ofc,you win more money in casino's, then wow, you do have some major luck their

RJOh's avatarRJOh

I haven't made my regular donation to the MM jackpot yet, but I will.  I've picked 39 WBs that have hit at least once in the last 39 drawings and 20 MBs that have hit at least  once in the last 268 drawings which my system will use to pick 20 combinations that have never matched more than three in the history of this game.  I'm hoping one of these combinations will no longer qualify for such a group after tonight's drawing.

Some thing very strange happened to me when I bought my Mega Millions ticket this afternoon; I usually play the same numbers on the playslip (2) advanced play for my (2) sets of numbers: 5-11-12-19-26 (2) and

1-11-13-14-16-(21) to play tonight-4/30/10  and on 5/4/10; The ticket was only suppose to be $4.00.  Well, the clerk at the liquor store did something very strange and pressed (5) QPS and the total ticket was $14.00.  Since you cannot cancel it, I had just enough money to buy the ticket (thank GOD); I don't know if this an omen or something but that has never happened to me before--THIS COULD BE A SIGN OF GOOD LUCK--GOING TO WIN IN (Southern) CALI PartyGOOD LUCK TO CA LOTTERY PLAYERS!!

I went last night but I didn't play Mega.  I played another, lower jackpot, better odds game.  I don't think I'll play ML at all tonight.  I thought I would play above $200M, but I guess I decided against it; the odds are so poor.  Perhaps I'll play if no one wins tonight.  I'll know at about 10:30PM PST.  That's what I like about this site's sister site, USAMEGA.COM.  They're very fast.

ya i agree, but even more so

it matters not if people need it or not,

its the fact they ask that bugs me

you dont see these people going to the richest places in  their state, ringing rich people door bells , and begging them

yet they do it to you, sense they feel somhow or a other , they have a right to ask you for your money sense you didn't "earn' it  by their moral codes,or whatever missed up logic in their heads

the only way to deal with these people, is the way of  middle finger ninjutsu

let the door hit them on the way out

, only good charities i ever seen in my life

, are people who dont ask for help, yet  get helped by someone just going by, saying what the hell, i help them out

aka, total random acts of kindness,  makes the giver feel good, and have people not shamed, as they never begged, it was gift to help them out

hell, i think i go to toys r us, buy a stack of 100$ gift cards, have them in my wallet,

when ever am  out to eat with friends, be a lot if i won

if i ever see a cute kid,  go up to  table, be  ,ya this random, but your kid can have this,  and disappear before anyone gets werid ideas

the kid would be astatic, and i have a nice feeling inside my self for making a kid happy

with that said, i hate beggers with ever thing in my being lol

this very well could be.  the other day someone wanted just one lottery ticket, and i accidently hit the $5 qp button.  well since the dude only wanted one he said he did not want the $5 qp.  so im like whatever, and just bought the darn thing.  i hit 3/5 wbs but now pb winning $7.  to me that is one of the biggest no no's... not buying or canceling accidental tickets.

I saw that, funny how state lottery sites update faster than the official site, maybe they just wait to do some extra calculating for ticket sales? I think it's safe to say if no one wins Tuesday (sure someone will)  it'll be over or close 300M Friday.

Remarkably, for reasons I can't understand - particularly since it's a much better game than Powerball - MM is selling less tickets for comparable drawings than it was before the cross-over.

This drawing according to Lottoreport, sold 94,009,915 tickets on average for a 15th drawing (large standard deviation.)

This drawing sold 68,493,051 tickets.

Maybe the lotto report numbers are wrong.  The report would have to individually gather sales data from all 38 states + D.C., which is a big task to do -- and maybe not be actually happening.  Or may not be happening accurately.  MUSL provides all-encompassing ticket sales data for Powerball, but there is no central organization doing that for MM.

I would think since states contribute 30% of their sales to the jackpots of both games, the games head quarters would have those figures after each drawings.

I'll be honest too, if I won the JP I certainly won't be sharing it with anyone on this or Any forum! I don't know any of you! None of us actually know each other-were nothing more than words on a screen each week - I only chime-in cause it's fun to respond to some of the peoples silly posts !

Here's the reality of it:  Winning , say, $300 M in the lotto is really not that much in the grand scheme of things. the first thing you do before you even see any of it is give away over half in taxes &  such !! And if you owe any back taxes, child support, etc...."they" are checking into all that before any money gets deposited ! and expect to be hit with the appropriate penalties added in !!

The amount your now left with is surely more than you ever had and now your happy life can start but think about the new "problems" that most of us common folk are not prepared to deal with; You have to become a business person now to be able to manage that kind of wealth, not to mention the new experience of Plenty of people/ friends/ distant family all hounding you for a hand-out and expecting a healthy dose too !

Ultimately, don't ask me for a portion of my pidilly winnings.....go hit up Oprah, Trump, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, The Mexican telephone guy who is somehow (?) the worlds riches man, Sir Richard Branson...etc...ect...THEY HAVE THE MONEY!!! ...Not some hapless Roll Eyes Lotto winner !!!!

It's not hard at all.   If you think about it a little, you see that the sales data is an essential part of finding out whether or not there was a winner.   It follows that all state lottery computers are networked.

No one would ever write a computer program to check the numbers without also counting the tickets.   Computers today are extremely fast.    The Apollo missions to the moon actually had less computing power than a digital wristwatch has today.

The size of the jackpot rollovers are another clue that MM sales are not as impressive as they should be.

Both games have astronomical odds, but dollar for dollar, the MM is a far better bet than powerball.   The pretax expectation value, using the cash value, the only value that actually counts, for the MM is actually better than 1 right now, a very rare thing in any form of gambling.

Nobody here is asking you for any of your winnings just try to be nice and have a good time here..ok?..When you and victor hit please do leave..

And so what is the point--of that--to brag that you were right-the idea is one of us "could" have been the winner and what difference does it make?? I'm here encourage WINNERS and generate some positive vibe instead of negative.  AGAIN--GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF THE LP FAMILY AND I HOPE SOMEONE WILL WIN FROM LP!!Dance

Dollar419,

it was not my intent to belittle LP or their members.  However, if I win on Tuesday, I shall thank you for your good luck wishes.  Wink

I need to win so I can move out of this project. So many depressed and crazy people around. Not a safe area.

Victor,

if you wait until you win the lotto before you move out of your San Jose projects, you'll end up dying there an old man.  Best you find some other means of leaving.

I Agree!

I see what Cal-lottoplayer meant. Lottery jackpot will not solve everything in a person's life. For example, if I have low self-eesteem before winning lottery, likely I will have low self-eesteem after winning lottery jackpot. Therefore, I need to take initiative to change my life regardless of winning lottery or not.

Too funny. After reading this post (BS), maybe I'll just skip buying tickets for Tuesday's jackpot. Who the hay wants the 'headache' of winning almost 300 mil and all the 'problems' that come with itROFL???

I have my tickets! I spent a whoping $2!

I want to see if I can be like the Powerball winners from north of Pittsburgh .... I haven't heard anything about them since the won a few years ago ..... I think that no news is good news!

I wish only the best to all of the Lottery Post members!

Waiting for that house at the lake! Sun Smiley
