The New York Lottery posted record revenue and profit in its latest fiscal year, the state announced on Thursday.

The lottery made $7.8 billion in sales of scratch-off tickets, other games and casino gambling in its 2009-10 fiscal year, which ended March 31. It is a 2.1 percent increase over the previous year, which was the old record-high.

The lottery made $2.67 billion of profit, a 5 percent increase from the previous record, set last year. The profit is used to help fund K-12 education.

Commissions paid to the eight gaming facilities in the state and 16,500 lottery retailers totaled $875 million.

"We're quite proud of our ability to increase profits yet again under such extraordinary economic conditions," said Gordon Medenica, director of the lottery. "More than ever, in these difficult fiscal times, we appreciate the enthusiasm of our players."

In the "traditional lottery" business, games such as Mega Millions, Sweet Million and Powerball posted increases in sales. Quick Draw and scratch-off tickets posted declines in sales.

In the video gaming business, net win (total bets, minus prize money paid out) increased at all but one casino — Monticello Casino and Raceway, located downstate.

Saratoga Gaming and Raceway, located in Saratoga Springs and the oldest casino in the state, posted a 1 percent increase in net winnings.
