"Whatever", said the teenaged daughter of a British couple who won a £56 million (US$88 million) Euro Millions lottery.
When Nigel Page discovered he had won £56 million on the lottery he couldn't say a word while his stunned partner Justine Laycock, said: "Oh my God".
But her 15-year-old daughter Georgia's reaction was like that of a typical teenager.
"She just said, 'Whatever'..she was a typical teenager about it," said Ms. Laycock after the couple discovered they were Britain's biggest winners, the Daily Mail reported on Tuesday.
Ms. Laycock, 41, is a senior sales negotiator for an estate agent while Mr. Page, 43, runs a property maintenance business.
The couple, who would make around £47,000 a week in interest if they banked all their jackpot, said they were confident that the massive win will not spoil their children.
"We're so proud of them — they are very level-headed.
"They are more calm about it than we are. They've joked about getting a tarantula and getting a little Shetland pony so her feet can run on the ground by the side while she's riding it but that's it. So all they want so far is a spider and a pony," Ms. Laycock was quoted as saying.
Mr. Page discovered he had won on Saturday morning when he checked his laptop computer while Ms. Laycock was having a lie-in after a night out with work colleagues.
"I logged into my account to see if we'd won. I saw the win for £55 there and just below it was the £56 million Euro Millions prize. I started shaking and couldn't speak," the Daily Mail quoted Page as saying.
Ms. Laycock said, "I knew something was up as Nigel never wakes me up on a Saturday morning and he looked so worried. All he said was, 'I need you urgently — I need to show you something'
"I thought something awful had happened but he took me to the computer and there it was on the screen. His hands were shaking so much he couldn't pick up the phone, so I called the lottery line and they confirmed it was true — we were the £56 million winners. Then we went into the front room and just stood there laughing."
The prize would make the couple among some of the wealthiest in the country, according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2009, the Guardian reported on its web site.
According to the list in April, the couple would become wealthier than Van Morrison (£50 million), Kylie Minogue (£35 million), and Michael Caine (£45 million) as well as Hugh Grant, Jenson Button and Jamie Oliver — all reported to be individually worth about £40 million.
Friday's £113 million Euro Millions jackpot was shared by two tickets, the other ticket being bought in Spain. The jackpot surpasses the £91 million paid last November that was shared between two tickets.

The couple have been together for eight years and have three children from previous relationships - Nigel's daughter, Ella and Justine's sonand daughter, Jacob and Georgia
Nigel has been a sky diving fan for nine years and is a member of his local sky diving club in South Cerney. Nigel says: "I've jumped out ofa plane at 12,000 feet but that's nothing compared to how I'm feeling now!

The couple plan to buy a new house but want to stay in the Cirencester area and hope to use their win to travel. Justine says: "It would belovely to get a five or six bedroom house with a pool and lots of space but we really enjoy the area we live in now so we won't move far. We'd also like to buy some where abroad where we can go on holiday but it'll have to be in the school holidays!"
now thats sounds like one hell of a plan, getting a 2nd home abroad, that could be really useful!

Well I'll take her share, since she appears to be non-interested at this point. I'm sure that teenage attitude will change soon, once she realizes what it can get her and she gets her hands on the actual dough.

I don't agree. Lotto jackpots should be around $21M and no more. That way there are more winners whose lives are changed. People don't need more than $7M after taxes to live on. If you do, you can't manage your finances.

I wonder how the Euro Lottery and the UK deal with taxes. The article doesn't go into their calculations and how they arrive at their figures. The article also doesn't explain whether the Euro winners are given a choice on whether they can collect all their winnings up front or if they are divided into payments.
We know, in the USA, the federal government and most states tax their winners. California is one state which does not tax winnings. However, even in California, the stated jackpot amount is divided over some 26 years. If a winner wants all the winnings upfront, he only get about 50%. In general, if a California lotto winner wants all their winnings immediately, he gets about 1/3 after taxes.
Who's to decide what amount of money someone deserves?? If you don't like large jackpots play lesser state games or scratchers. Their are many different kinds of lottery games to appeal to different kinds of lottery players. Large Progressive jackpots appeal to certain groups of people who like to dream big. The larger jackpots generate more revenue for states, the lottery, for education.....so they should be as large as the Market will Bear....as we are a Free Market society(or were before the gov't started taking over banks). If someone can't handle $70 million they probably couldn't handle $7million....... I agree the lottery could do a better job helping advise lotto winners........But in the end it's personal freedom....Including the freedom to fail........

Not sure now, but there was a time when the U.S. was the only country that taxed gambling winnings.
In a lot of other countries, whtever you win is yours, no tax.
One of our Aussies hjere on LP once explained that they way Australia does it is the ticket is $1.03 AUS. The $.03 has pre-paid the tax for the winner.

That is certainly one word that should be banned; "whatever"; just what does that mean exactly--it means: "do whatever you please; everything or anything that"....--based on this I would assume she would want the family to do whatever with her share of the winnings!!

SInce Australia is reigned by British monarchy I would think the same tax concept holds true. I do know that the average Brit is flat taxed around 30%...no matter the income...that is harsh with no year end reward or tax releif.Will research though , as it would be interesting to find out!

Congratulations to them! However, I think they were very unwise to go public, the UK lottery allows anonymity for all lottery winners; and all lottery winnings are tax-free. I suspect they will regret the publicity, time will tell.
