AUSTIN, Tx. — Mega Millions sales in Texas for last Friday's $333 million advertised jackpot were $49.8 million for the prize's entire roll cycle, the highest sales recorded in Texas for any game.
"The roll cycle began on July 10 with a $12 million starting jackpot and ended with a $325 million advertised jackpot that, because of brisk sales, was bumped to $333 million," said Texas Lottery Commission Deputy Executive Director Gary Grief. "This is the highest dollar value of sales for a Mega Millions jackpot roll cycle since Mega Millions sales began in Texas in December of 2003."
The second-highest sales total occurred in March of 2007. The $370 million advertised jackpot created sales of $47.9 million for the roll cycle.
"Four tickets each won the second-tier prize of $250,000, and one of those was purchased with the Megaplier feature, which bumped the prize to $1 million," Grief said. "That $1 million ticket sold in Dickinson was redeemed this morning at our Houston Claim Center."
Tonight's Mega Millions jackpot is an estimated $12 million. Texas players currently have an opportunity to play for two other attractive jackpots.
Tonight's Texas Two Step jackpot is worth an estimated $1.2 million, and Wednesday's Lotto Texas jackpot is worth an estimated $45 million.
Explain this to me; those people who only play the lottery when the jack pot is way up,
does it mean that anything below $100M is not a lot of money for them? or maybe they
think it's only worth their while to try only when the jackpot is very high and to ignore it
while it is low. To each their own right? : )
Yeah,I think about this too,even though I live in a state that only play in the POWERBALL lottery! I know that every time the POWERBALL reset itself it start at $20 million USD,so the lump sum would be around $10 million USD. Now,that is a lot to me!
It has to do with the buzz it generates. your regulars will play it every time regardless of jackpot. the others that dont play it often will jump on the bandwagon only when they hear about it on the news or from other people they work with (which usually happens at high jackpots)...so i think the reason is the attention the higher pots create...the people who are opposed to playing the lotto because they thinks its a waste (since they know the odds are so slim) will only take that opportunity once or twice a year and that happens when you have big pots...it doesn't justify the reason moneywise if you happen to win..its just how it works with some people...
Well I personally spend more $ when jackpot goes up to the sky - for the minimal one I spend $1, for those going 100M or higher it may be $10 or more. I know it is stupid and the odds are the same but hmm... if I can afford it why not... if I win more I can do a lot more... after all gambling by itself is a stupid thing...
In short I believe even regular players spend more on 300M than on 12M, plus of course those who attracted by media support plus the guys from the bordering states start their engines too - and they don't drive a hell of a miles to buy $1 dollar ticket for sure.
I'm one of those people who play no matter what the size the jackpot is. It could be at 10 million or 300 million. It doesn't matter to me. I would love to win a jackpot of any size.
My brother is like that. If it's under 100mil he doesn't play (although I have seen him play Mega as low as 50mil). He say's if he's going to be lucky enough to win, he doesn't want to waste it on a small jackpot.
He won't play multi draws either. When powerball was big a couple of weeks ago, he drove to LA to play for each of the last four or five large-dollar draws (2 hrs one way). I just bought tickets for as many advance draws as I could - and only had to go over the border once.
