One Hell of a lucky day

Couple from Hell didn't have to wait until it froze over

If Hell were going to have a lottery winner, it seemed only fitting that it would come on the scariest day of the year.

That's what happened to Hell's John and Sue Wilson, who won a Fantasy 5 prize of $115,001 on Wednesday, which also just happened to be Halloween.

Sue Wilson, a teacher's aide, said although the couple knew their numbers had been drawn, they didn't realize the drawing had been held on Halloween until they claimed their prize two days later.

"How cool is that?" Sue Wilson, 43, said. "We live in Hell and won it on Halloween."

The couple said they plan on paying off bills, while John Wilson said he might finish up some home projects, such as putting up trim along their new flooring.

A trip to visit relatives in Georgia might also be on the to-do list and they plan on buying their 13-year-old son, John, a Nintendo Wii video game console.

"It's not $200 million or anything - it's not going to change our life, but it's ... something to say, 'OK, we're going to have a good Christmas,' " said the elder John Wilson, who is an electrician.

The winning numbers — 9, 21, 10, 23, 28 — had a special significance for the couple. The first two numbers are their wedding date. The last three were their birthday month and dates.

The Wilsons had been playing those numbers starting the week after they were married, but stopped about eight years ago because they figured the money could go to other uses.

Sue and John Wilson used to play their numbers on the lottery regularly, then stopped until a few weeks ago. On Halloween, the Hell residents found out they'd won $115,001. Their plans are, after paying bills, to buy their son John a Wii electronic game console, and perhaps take a trip to Georgia. Then about a month ago, the family took a trip to Georgia.

"That trip just killed me," John Wilson, 45, said. "(I thought) 'I need to win some money. I'm going to start playing our original numbers again.'"

Both Sue and John Wilson were surprised to see the winning number online matched the one on their ticket, which was purchased at the Mugg and Bopps at 850 E. Main St. in Pinckney.

Instead of having hot dogs for dinner Thursday night, the family went out to celebrate at Bleachers Bar and Grill in Pinckney.

"I'm just trying to keep a level head about things," Sue Wilson said. "This is such a positive thing for us. It's going to give us a clean slate."

Although $115,001 won't change their life, it sure can help. Congrats to them!
