A unanimous vote Thursday of 6 to 0 by the state lottery commission will allow racetracks to operate table games 24 hours a day 7 days a week, but there's still no date for when dealers will be passing out the cards.
The lottery commission said they would be ready to open table games by November 1, a date that is quickly approaching, and has residents waiting.
"I do know a few people that would like to go try it out. I don't know how that will turn out, but they'd like to try it out and see how it goes," said Melinda Niehaus of Wheeling, W.Va.
Wheeling resident Janie Gillis says she's been paying attention to all the developments and has seen all the effort the racetracks and the lottery commission have made to get table games going.
"I really hope it goes well because they put a lot of time and energy into it," said Gillis.
Even those who didn't support gaming from the beginning say now that it's coming, they hope it can do the area good.
"My parents didn't vote for it. I didn't vote for it. I voted no, but still it could bring more money to the city of Wheeling and more attention," said Alex Darnley of Wheeling.
The racetracks could test out that 24/7 operation of table games as early as next week, then the lottery commission would have to review the test results before the public would be allowed to play around the clock.
