Tenn. Lottery says duplicate numbers drawn were legit; can we be sure?

Strange drawing results come right after revelation of weeks of flawed drawings

The Tennessee Lottery's Cash 3 game had the exact same winning number in both the midday and evening drawings Thursday.

Kym Gerlock, vice president of communications for the Tennessee Lottery, said the reappearance of number 940 was random chance.

"It was not an error. It's rare, but it does happen," Gerlock said. "Each drawing is a totally separate instance and one is not related to another."

Gerlock said not only are the numbers randomly generated by computers, but there is a drawing to see which of two computers will be used to produce the winning number. She said the fact that the same number came up may not be that extraordinary.

"I know it's certainly happened in other jurisdictions," she said.

The reoccurrence seemed suspect to Walter Witwer of Oak Ridge, who blames the lottery's use of computerized number generation instead of pingpong balls.

"That happened without us authorizing it," Witwer said of the switch.

He says he alerted the lottery that the Cash 3, Cash 4 and Lotto 5 games were shortchanging lottery players.

The random number generators did not permit numbers with recurring digits, like 772 or 233 to win, even though people could play the numbers.

"After a month's time they found it," Witwer said. "The Tennessee Lottery to me is being run by a lot of crooks ... Pretty hard to do, to have the same number come up twice like that in the Tennessee Lottery."

Gosh.  I'm sure glad they explained that "random chance" thing!

Probably explains the rash of doubles after the first "glitch" surfaced..

Pete,

I feel bad for you in Tennessee.  Things were going so well with the lottery.

Wash. DC uses RNG also here is a few occurrences i found. It does happen and can happen with ball drawings as well as RNG's

The drawing below are from Washington DC which uses RNG

if im reading your post correctly the repeat happened in DC on consecutive days but in tennessee it was actually the same day one midday and one evening.

four4me

yes i know it happened on the same day in Tennessee it's a lot of work to check these things manually i just wanted to give an example.

I know it has happened somewhere else that uses RNG.

It not a big deal. Tennessee paid real good on the number that day.

I am not for RNG by a long shot but people need to use their heads and remember RNG although computer generated still can draw the same identical number just like it has happened with balls.

If that drawing were a ball drawing no one would have said much about it. But because it was an Rng drawing people automatically assume that it cant happen because it's programed not to, and that's just not the case.

What about an explanation for so many doubles after there being no doubles for so long?

Is it "random" trying to "Make-up" or maybe the State's lottery trying to "Make-up", Did they produce all those doubles "Again" on "Demand"?

The numbers outcome is manipulated so easily, on demand, as they might want to, now they know (How).

Well DUH !  Where did he get the idea that the LC has to get permission from the players to do anything ?  It's the government !

It's like that commercial where the guy says  I'm the sherriff. I can do anything I want.

Hoisted on their own pitard they are....Wonder how many other gremlins they have in their software?

Oh I believe they did explain it.  They admitted there was a glitch in their RNG software, and now the game is trying to "catch up". As to all those who played doubles and lost their money.....TN basically said Tough noogies.

Of course, the glitches may not yet be over........

While they are under the microscope now is the time to let them know you oppose them using computers to draw numbers.

Everyone is looking at them with skeptical eyes every drawing they have is being closely watched. If you stop putting pressure on them to switch back to ball drawings then it'll be the peoples fault.

There are people calling for an investigation. Let your voices be heard. Email the investigators and let them know what you think about it.
