A former deputy director of the New York Lottery has been named acting director of the organization.

Gurney replaces Robert McLaughlin, who served as Director of the New York Lottery from November, 2006 to August, 2007.  Mr. McLaughlin recently accepted a position in the private sector, according to lottery officials.

Gurney has worked at the lottery since 1998, and was most recently director of operations and administration in addition to being deputy director.  His areas of responsibility included Financial Management, Prize Payment Audit, Internal Audit, Information Security, Lottery Operations, and Telecommunications.

Gurney has served in the New York Lottery since 1988 and has been actively involved in the procurement of the Division's video gaming central system, video gaming terminals, instant tickets, external auditors, and the traditional lottery central system. Prior to joining the New York Lottery, he worked for several years in the banking and retail industries.

Gurney is also a current member of the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries' (NASPL) Standards Initiative Steering Committee which contains representatives from state lotteries, vendors, and retailers from the U.S. and Canada.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, Mr. Gurney received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Husson College located in Bangor, Maine.

The Director of the New York Lottery is appointed by the Commissioner of Taxation and Finance and is charged with supporting the division's mission to earn revenue for education.
