Used scratch ticket codes to pick out winners

A Heath, Ohio, woman was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years of community control on Monday after she admitted to stealing lottery tickets she knew were winners.

Courtney L. Carson, 37, was found guilty of grand theft, a fourth-degree felony, after confessing to scanning lottery tickets' bar codes to see if they were winners while working at Heath Carryout between Jan. 15 and April 14, 2006.

Carson, last known address 48 Carey Lane, then cashed the winning tickets elsewhere.

An inventory of the Irving Wick Drive store's lottery tickets revealed about $5,300 worth of lottery tickets were missing, Licking County Assistant Prosecutor Duke Frost said previously.

Frost said as far as authorities know, Carson didn't sell the losing tickets to the store's customers.

Mardele Cohen, director of communications for the Ohio Lottery Commission, said an instant ticket must be scratched to determine if it is a winner — either the playing field or the area covering the bar code.

Carson also was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.

good. I hate crooked clerks.Thumbs Up My husband asked what would prevent clerks from doing this very thing and I couldn't answer him, except to say "I'm sure they have their security measures." Now, I can add this. He was going on about how he didn't trust the kind of scratch offs that you buy from a clerk. He preferred the kind you got out of a vending maching.

This  issue  about  clerks  and  the  lottery  is  serious  accross  the  nation and  it  seems  to  be  happening  a  lot;

The  fact  that  these  people  were  caught  is  good  what  about  the  multitude  that  were  not  caught  and  have  cheated  millions  of  people  from  there  winnings .......money  is  the  root  of   all  evil ......Bash

It looks like it's time to stop buying lottery tickets. Winning doesn't mean "money" anymore; it's more like "maybe money".

Having money isn't evil.  Using it to cheat people is.

The popular phrase, which is often misquoted, is from the New Testament (Timothy) and reads

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Someone please let us know if a scratch ticket can be scanned ( the bar code ) to determine if it is a winner without uncovering the 3 digit number code.

Inquiring minds want to know....

I'll like to know the same information too...If is true i was going to say that she could have gotten away with it if she had the help of a friend (s); she probably was a loner...I feel compasion when woman is a swindler and she does that kind of job by herself and not the help of other males but don't feel compassion when a man does that kind of work...Men are fill with evil..I don't trust them...

I would love to agree with you, but then it would be tantamount to admitting that women aren't equal to men and do not have the same capacity for greatness or for failure.

Did you see Enemy Mine?  I've seen it many times.  I bet it is a movie you would really like, Pumpi.   Louis Gossett Jr explains why the Drac world doesn't have 2 sexes.

Anyway, do you think Ted Bundy was any less evil than Aileen Wuornos?  Both were serial killers and the men she murdered are just as dead as the women he strangled.  The reason those pretty blonde teachers keep getting away with molesting students is because we are a society brainwashed by appearance.  "Too pretty to go to prison" is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard in recent years, because Debra LaFave (pretty as she is) still screwed her students and belongs behind bars with the scary looking male crackheads who have snot running down their faces.

(Oy!  Now I'm singing Aqualung.  "Sitting on a park bench, eyeing little girls with bad intent.  Snot running down his nose, greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes...")

My point is that evil comes in all colors, sizes and genders.

I can't really say what my favorite movie is of all time.  I've watched so many of them for over 40 years.  I guess Shawshank Redemption, Cool Hand Luke, The Lion in Winter, Papillon, Benny and Joon, Total Recall, To Kill a Mockingbird, Strangers on a Train, Dances With Wolves, Clockwork Orange, Tom Jones, Annie Hall, The Pawnbroker, Sophie's Choice, Midnight Cowboy, Forrest Gump, Big, Children of a Lesser God, Body Heat, The Untouchables* ....

Nah, can't even begin.

*The scene with the baby carriage in the train station....wow!"

Wish I hadn't started.  Now more pop up every second like The Green Mile, Butch Cassidy, The Sting, The Deer Hunter, Awakenings, Elmer Gantry, Drugstore Cowboy, When Harry Met Sally, Terms of Endearment, Easy Rider.....Someone - please stop me!!!  LOL
