Powerball

The Powerball jackpot continues to move upward.

Even though the grand prize was not hit Wednesday evening, 946,640 players across the nation won a total of more than $7.6 million in prizes in "America's Game".

Because no one correctly matched all six numbers the jackpot will grow to an estimated $205 million for Saturday night's drawing.

It is the largest jackpot since April 12, 2006, when one ticket from Missouri matched all five numbers plus the Powerball for a $220 million jackpot prize.

The cash option for the Saturday, January 20th drawing will be an estimated $98.3 million.

The numbers drawn Wednesday were 16, 35, 49, 50, 52 and the Powerball was 31. The Power Play multiplier was 2.

Ten lucky tickets in Indiana (1), Minnesota (1), New Hampshire (1), Oregon (3), Pennsylvania (2), South Carolina (1), and Tennessee (1) correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $200,000. One additional winning ticket in Connecticut not only matched the 5 white but also had the Power Play option that multiplied the win by 2 for a $400,000 cash prize.

Thirty-three tickets matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000. Eight additional winners of that prize category also had the Power Play option that multiplied the win 2 times for a total of $20,000.

A total of 132,325 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 2 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you multiply any winnings from 2-5 times, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels.

Players purchased more than $40.2 million in tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night.

The lotteries sold over $2.8 billion in Powerball tickets in fiscal year 2006. That translates into approximately $800 million for worthwhile state projects.

if it can get past a few more rounds/rolls

we be seeing a new record now!

at this level of money/jackpot size they all was understate by a few million come draw time total

so we could indeed break 100m in cash for a jackpot this draw me thinks

you're right! people like to see $100 bills, $100,000, and $100 Millions. They love the round up numbers.

But still, this is a huge jackpot. Just buy the ticket and hope to win. It's enough for you to have a luxury life when you've won it.

It has reached the point where the jackpot after burners kick in.  With MM being at $25M, more players from neighboring MM states will be buying tickets too.

I can only hope i was one of the two winners in PA for a ticket. I and all my fellow lottery posters can use the 2nd place prize.

as much as i would love to be the winner next time i would still love to see it reach past the old record. man that would be something. can you imagine one winner winning a pot over 400 million. i know that is not the record but it could be the new record. I would probably pack up the wife and go to middle of spain for about 2 months. get me a satelite set up so i can watch all my american tv shows and practice my spanish for those two months.

yo caro much dinero!! SI!

When I see a huge jackpot like this, I get 2 feelings. (1) WOW!   (2) When a jackpot rolls over week after week, and we know millions of people all of the country are buying tickets, isn't this a sign that the game is nearly impossible to win?  One winner will definitely win, and it might be one of us. However, simple logic and common sense says that it won't be.

I still wish all of you a lot of luck.  Don't forget to mention LP when you win!

why yes it is near impossible but that is why we enter. it is like trying to fish old bubba from the bottom of the lake that everyone has been talking about for years. it may take a few years for people to catch old bubba but as soon as someone lands him. Bubba 2 takes over the story and soom becomes just bubba.

i catch a lot guppies a lot and sometimes the bigger fish. i go to the pond every week trying to catch bubba. the joy and the frustration comes in the hunt and the wait.

I WILL CATCH BUBBA ONE DAY!!!!

"we know millions of people all of the country are buying tickets, isn't this a sign that the game is nearly impossible to win?"

That's just a sign that the odds are high, but the game follows the laws of probability. The lump sum went up about $11 million, which means they expect to sell about 40 million tickets.  If those tickets represented 40 million of the possible combinations (they actually represent a lot less), the odds of awinner would be about 40 in 145, or about 28%. IOW, we really shouldn't expect a winner from this drawing. It's more than twice as likely that it will roll again.  On average we should expect 1 winner for every 145 million tickets, but sometimes it happens onthe first drawing and occasionally it gets to 250 or 300 before it happens.

What is nearly impossible is for any one person to win.  The best you can do is have a realisic idea of your odds and then make your decision.
