The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) said this morning it's not worried that ticket retailers win prizes of more than $10,000 six times more often than the rest of the players.
There have been four confirmed cases of retailer misconduct over the last two years, with three involving ticket sellers misleading ticket holders about how much or whether they had won.
Some ticket buyers say they have considered that possibility before.
One man says if the lottery retailer has the display terminal away from him when he can't see it, he won't go there to check his ticket. A woman says she keeps her full attention firmly fixed on the clerk, she records her numbers, and she signs the backs of her tickets.
The BCLC says it's possible retailers win more often, just because they play more often, but also admits it doesn't have any proof to back up that notion.
To explain their lack of concern, the BCLC stated that retailers are asked detailed questions before they can pick up prizes over $10,000.
The BCLC also says it's confident the current procedures in place to prevent fraud are working properly, and they don't plan on changing them.
However, it's planning to increase the number of self serve ticket checking machines available, and recommends customers should sign the back of tickets to protect themselves in the event of a dispute.
The retailers wins were most common for amounts between $10,000 and $50,000, although records aren't kept on prizes below $10,000.
