The winners of the biggest Megabucks jackpot won in Door County were introduced Monday in Fish Creek. The shock of winning still hasn't gone away for the lucky couple.
Nearly 30 years of playing the lottery made Pat and Chuck Stage occasional winners. Monday's trip to the Fish Creek BP made them multi-millionaires.
Pat's played the same numbers for years but never heard them all on the news until two Wednesdays ago.
"She started checking the numbers, and I heard a blood-curdling scream," Chuck recalls.
"I said, 'We won! We won!'" Pat says.
"You just have that usual banter going back and forth — 'Are you kidding me?'-type thing — and then we told all the kids in the house," son Jan Stage said.
And what did Chuck do, knowing he was becoming a millionaire? "Get settled down. I got dressed and went to work."
It was the biggest Megabucks jackpot in five years. The Stages chose the lump-sum payment of almost $6 million.
"We're in our 60s, so we figured the lump sum was the best way to go," Pat says.
Chuck says he'll keep his part-time job trimming trees while the Stages pay debts and give money to their kids and to charity.
The husband and wife who own the Fish Creek BP are getting plenty out of this, too. The state gives them a $100,000 commission and all the attention that comes from selling a winning lottery ticket.
Mike Jacobsen says he planned to have some work done on the station anyway, and some of the cash will go toward that, "probably a little into retirement, and hopefully some left over for a trip."
Today I am lucky too. Pick up $1 on Mcdonald's Drive-Thru. This is my 3rd time. The first dollar I banked it already. $2 still remain in my spare change jar.
Boy did they get a treat, a big treat.
