Mass. lottery addresses Asian gambling addicts

Massachusetts Lottery

The Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling is taking aim at a new group — Asian gamblers.

The council is dedicating $100,000 from the state Lottery to the new effort, the largest amount they've ever used to address a single demographic group.

Executive director Kathleen Scanlon says compulsive gambling is a problem in the Asian community.

Casinos have been aggressively marketing to Asians in recent years.

Former counselor Ming Chang has worked with Asian gambling addicts and says that many of them didn't know where to go for help.

The council plans to focus on the state's Chinese community. They will hire a Mandarin-speaking coordinator and train social workers to treat Asian gambling addicts.

I have noticed that Asians make up a rather large contingent of gamblers at every casino I have been in, but so do a couple of other demographic groups :

Senior Citizens

Younger generation ( college-age types )

I see plenty of them too.....

Maybe that's why so many people over 70 win in Florida!  I think it's partly because they're retired and are spending the money on vacations they've planned for many years. I was told that one reason, besides the population, so many people win in Miami-Dade county is that the Hispanic population spends much more on lottery tickets.  So who knows?

I don't like grouping people into a statistic like this, however.

Syllogism:

Dogs, cats, and horses have 4 legs

Men, women and children have 2 legs

The average mammal has 3 legs

The only time I think people should be classified into groups is when they are boarding a plane.

Todd, eventually we'll all have to fly naked.   If they start watching passengers in the bathrooms, it will change the whole meaning of puddle jumper for me.

BTW, am I only member rating topics?  I've been on several tonight with no rating.  I just rated this average (3 stars)  I might rate a topic 4 or 5 stars too, but I just rated another topic poor (1 star) and unless others participate, I'll begin to feel like the naysayer around here when I don't like someone's thread and we've been asked to rate them honestly!

Don't worry, I'm sure when the rating start getting more visibility on the site, like when they are on the topic listings, I'm sure more people will notice them and rate.  I appreciate that you take the extra time to do so.

I've seen the stars but I guess I just tune them out as I do the ads. Not knowing how they worked and not seeing anything else related to them that could be clicked on I clicked on them and thought I might get a popup box or something... no such animal but the 3 stars went to four and it took it as my rating. What if I wanted something other than 4? There didn't seem to be any way to control it that I could tell. It didn't give me a chance to click again or take my click back.

Doh! I get it now. Hover the mouse over the number of stars you want to rate at... then click! And I take back my four star rating! Agree with stupid
